Orono, MN
A Compliance inspection was completed for the existing on-site sewage treatment
system located on this property. The system consists of 2-1000 gallon septic tanks,
1-1000 gallon pumping chamber&a pressurized mound system with a 10'x 55'rock
bed for a 4 bedroom home built in 1988.
Soil boring#1 found mottled soil(redox features)at 1.5'into the original soil. Soil
boring#3 found the original soil at elevation 92.3& bottom of the rock bed at elev.
92.9 leaving .6'of sand below the rock bed&a 2.1'separation from the bottom of the
rock bed& redox features. Soil boring#2 found mottled soil at 1.7'into the original
soil. Soil boring#4 found the original soil at elev.91.4&the bottom of the rock bed
at elev.92.6 leaving 1.2'of sand below the rock bed &a 2.9'separation. The system
meets the required 2'separation from the bottom of the rock bed & redox features&
is classified as in compliance with Minnesota Chapter 7080 rules.
The home has 5 bedrooms which requires a 10'x 63'rock bed. To add to the system,
the existing rock bed will need to be removed&raised to elevation 93.8 to meet the
3'separation. The rock bed must be removed with 4"of sand &replaced with a
backhoe(excavator)with limited travel on top of the mound (loam topsoil will need
to be above the plastic limit). Then replace the rock bed, distribution pipes&sandy
loam & loam cover. The rock bed will be added to at the east end of the mound. The
topsoil cover removed from the mound may be used to re shape the side slope.
Remove the rock&sand from the site.
The existing tanks may be used upon completion of a Tank integrity report passing.
If the tanks cannot be used, install 2-1250 gallon septic tanks&1-1250 gallon
pumping chamber&the existing tanks will need to be abandoned, pumped&filled
with soil &a Tank Abandonment report completed by a licensed contractor. The
pump tank if used will need to have the hole sealed for a 2"diameter pipe.
This onsite sewage treatment system is designed for a Type I system,Type 1,five
bedroom home in accordance with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency chapter
7080&local ordinances.
A pumping chamber will need to be installed to lift the effluent to the treatment area.
The power supply&switches must be located outside the manhole&pumping
chamber In a weather proof enclosure. A warning device must be installed with a
light&sound device, this is in case of a pump failure.
The manifold&supply line must have back drainage to the pumping chamber. The
distribution pipes shall have their ends capped. Be sure the rock&sand fill material
are clean. The sod layer below the entire mounded area must be turned over,Just
break up the sod.
If the tanks have less than 2'of cover, the lids, risers&maintenance hole covers
must be insulated to a value of R10.
Cleanouts for each lateral must be insulated &be accessible from finished grade in
an Irrigation box with a ball valve.
All neighboring wells are located greater than 100'away from the proposed
treatment area.
Keep all heavy equipment off of the proposed treatment area before and after
construction. The treatment area should be marked off before construction. This
design is not valid&the system will need to be relocated if failure to protect the
sites for new on-site sewage systems.
MANAGEMENT PLAN:
The tanks need to be maintained at a minimum of 1 time every 2 years, check with
you pumper to set up a schedule.
System inspected for areas by owner&or Inspector as determined by the local unit
of Government.
Any other requirements as determined by the local unit of Government.
With proper installation&maintenance, this system should have no problem in
treating septic effluent effectively.
Nothing other than human waste, toilet tissue, laundry, showers, water softners etc.
should be disposed of into the system. Recommend Iron filters be diverted out of the
system. Garbage disposals are not recommended. Excessive amounts of soaps,
antibacterial soaps, cleaning agents, shower cleaners used every shower& chlorine
agents may kill the bacteria needed to treat septic effluent. Additives are not
recommended. Recommend laundering be limited to 3 to 4 loads per day.
Thank You
Steven B.Schirmers
