November 6, 2001 Phillip J. Smith biiui West Lafayette Hoad Orono, MN 55331 He: Kitchen Hemodeiing Mr. Smith: I have reviewed the drawings you sent for the kitchen remodeling of your home. The structural issue is me removal or a Dearing wail between the kitchen and dining room. You asked that i size a beam to replace the bearing wall, and check the existing steel beam in the floor below which will support a new post for the beam. . The new beam will support the second floor as well as a portion of the roof load. This will require a beam made up of 3- 1 3/4"x 16" Microllam i_VLs (laminated veneer lumber). The existing second floor joists can be hung from the sides Of the beam with joist hangers, but the beam vilin still be deeper than the joists and will have to extend below the ceiling. Four 2x4 studs are required under each end of the beam. Solid blocking is required under the studs to transfer the load to the masonry foundation or steel beam below. The existing steel beam is noted to be 8"deep, but the width and thickness of the beam top and bottom flanges is also needed to determine the exact beam size. In order to carry the new distribution of loads on the beam, the beam will have to be at least a W8x21, whichis an 8"deep beef))vvitti iiaiIges 5 1/4" 'IUC and 3/O"thick. If the flanges are less than required, it will be necessary to look at other options. Callame if you have 1 ,iny questions. / /erely, !! ! o t 1144 Y., V.. Any744:'-= . .. Lesley C. M ttson, F E. PI rani vivw, $10.1 a.J.,v I Re: Kitchen Remodeling Mr. Smith: This letter is a follow-up of my earlier letter of November 6. The comments below are based on our subsequent conversations. 1. The beam in the second floor can be a steel beam in lieu of the 16" Microilam beams, ;n ordea to keep the beam within the depth of the 2x10 floor joists. The steel beam is to be a W8x24 (6" deep, 24 pounds per foot). Provide 4-2x4 studs under each end of the beam, with solid blocking under the studs to the beam or wall below. 2. The existing steel beam in the first floor will be adequate to carry the load of one end of the steel beam above. The existing beam is a one piece member with a column at midspan. understand it is an 8 inch deep beam (W8x15) with a bottom flange at least 4"wide and 5/16' thick. C. I me if you have ny questions.
