RE: Septic System at 1889 West Farm Road
Dear Mr. Stewart:
The septic system at 1889 West Farm Road installed in September
of 1989 has been observed to be failing. During an inspection in
June of 1990 , it was observed that drainage water was standing
just uphill of the mound and an area at the toe of the mound was
surfacing. Minor landscaping changes were made to direct
drainage around the mound and grass was _established to reduce
erosion. Subsequent inspection revealed that the downhill toe of
the mound still appeared to be excessively moist on a regular
basis, however the cause of the problem was unknown.
A report has been received at the City Offices regarding the
septic system at this property from S-P Testing, Inc. dated
August 19 , 1991 . The report indicates that effluent was
surfacing from the downhill toe of the mound in July of 1991.
Shortly after a 2 inch rainfall in August, the system was again
inspected and rain water was found to be entering the pumping
chamber from the 2 inch supply line to the mound. It was also
noted that a steady flow about the size of a garden hose was
entering the pumping chamber from its inlet pipe while no one
was home. Mr. Schirmers indicated that both problems could
likely be solved by resealing the tanks and repairing a float
switch which was malfunctioning. A copy of the report from S-P
Testing has been enclosed.
Because this system has exhibited surfacing problems since
shortly after it first came into use, the extraneous flows into
the tank may well be a result of inadequate initial sealing of
the tanks during installation. As the system installer, you are
hereby requested to inspect this system and repair any unsealed

doing this work so I can be present.
Please contact me at the City Offices if there are any questions.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
