Box 66 Orono, MN 55356 Crystal Bay, MN 55323-0066 January 14, 2009 Geffre Interiors 2370 Wayzata Boulevard West Long Lake MN 55356 This is to remind you that the display of temporary business signs (banners, readerboards, etc) is regulated by Orono City Code, which can be summarized as follows: a. There shall be no more than four temporary business sign permit issued per calendar year per business, each for a period of not more than ten days. The sign (including banners or balloons), sign supports or portable stand must be removed from public view at the end of the period. b. Total area of the sign shall not exceed 32 square feet per surface (64 square feet total signage allowed for two-sided portable sign). Advertising balloons are not subject to area restrictions but must meet all applicable federal and state standards. There shall be no more than one temporary sign per street frontage, and, if separate multiple signs are proposed, the total area of the signs shall not exceed 32 square feet. c. Temporary business signs require a permit from the city. Multi-tenant buildings are allowed one permit at a time. Allocation of the temporary business sign permit to tenants is the responsibility of the property owner or designated manager, who must sign all applications for sign permits. d. The owner or manager of the business and the owner of the property are equally responsible for the proper location, maintenance and removal of the sign. All temporary signs shall be located on a property so that they do not impede safety by obstructing vision of pedestrians or motor vehicle operators. e. The city may, without notice, remove any temporary sign erected in violation of this section or any other federal, state, or local law or ordinance. Any signs not claimed within 30 days after removal may be destroyed by the city. (For sale/rent signs are regulated by a separate set of regulations.) Since you have been conscientious about obtaining permits in the past I was perplexed when this banner was taken down and replaced by a rug sale banner but we received no permit application. Here is a link to the application form: http://www.ci.orono.mn.us/Permits/2004%20Sign%20Permit-Online.pdf Please either obtain a permit or remove the banner before February 12. Failure to do so will result in the matter being forwarded to the City Attorney for prosecution. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
