To the Orono Council:
For more than twenty years I have been a member of the Minnesota
Transportation Museum. This is a large group of people interested
in preserving artifacts involved in transporting people in the
Twin Cities area. This is an all volunteer group.
We have already restored a steam locomotive (now operating in Stillwater).
We have three trolley cars running at the Lake Harriet, Lake Calhoun area.
Now, just last year we have started restoration on a streetcar boat,
This boat in the early 190U's took people from the docks in Excelsiox
to an amusement park on Big Island.
We have a large building in Excelsior in which this is being Clone.
Many individuals have contributed in time and money to this project.
Even the Minnesota Historical Society has given us a large grant.
The plan is to operate the boat regular*r on Lake Minnetonka, charging
people to ride in order to defray expenses of running it.
Now we have located a "Twin Cities" streetcar body presently owned by
a private party. This person would like to donate this to the Museum.
We would like to incorporate the operation of this car in conjunction
with the streetcar boat project. The streetcar will take quite a
bit of restoration and we must have a place to do this. The boat will
not be completed for several years, and until this is done we cannot
move the steetcar into our building to work on it.
Would it be possible to store the streetcar body on my farm until we can
move it into the shop? I have 55 aures across the highway from the
Orono School sJ*stem. There are several spo:tt on my farm where this
will not offend the Public's View. The streetcar at the present time
has an exterior protecting it from the weather. It looks like a small
building.
