HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-07-1990 Park Commission Minutes .I `� � Orono Park Commission Meeting August 7, 1990 The meeting was called to order by Chairman, Dick Flint. The following members were present: Vongries, Kelley, Bradley, Flint, Wiison, Giibert, Erger, Kokal and Public Works Director, Gerhardsen. The Ju1y minutes were reviewed. Alex Vongries had some corrections. The minutes were approved as corrected. Dick Flint listed items to be covered on the agenda for the evening and asked for additions. Alex Vongries reported that he had appeared before the Council on July 23rd to request that Development plans be sent to the Park Commission just as they are to the Planning Commission. Community Cvoperation Jim Gilbert and Les Kelley volunteered to attend the Community Education meeting on August 13th to help in the coordination of recreational facilities forOronv. Bicycle Trail Plans Dick Flint reported that he and John Gerhardson had met with Tad Jude, County Commissioner and Pat Murphy, public works director for Hennepin County concerning any county help we may get on the building of bike trails. Different options of funds and strategies were discussed. The separate trail versus an eight foot paved shoulder was also discussed. Susan Wilson and Dick Flint volunteered to collect data on costs of the different trails - look at traffic counts - try to prioitize the roads we want for trails - and bring this to the entire commissivn. The need for a bike/hike easement on the Fulierton property was again discussed. Philip Bradley moved that we ask the City to add a bike/hike easement i nc i uded w i th the ut i 1 i ty easement on Co. Rd. 6 and Co. 1 16. I t was seconded and passed. Jim Giibert made a motion that the effect of any motion from the Park Commission related to Development be communicated by letter to the Planning Commission, Jeanne Mabusth, the land surveyor, and Developer. It was seconded and passed. Orono Parks Report Alex Vongries gave a current status report on Orono Parks. ( See two enclosures.) A lenghty discussion followed. It was suggested that the uniformity and quality of the signage at the parks could be improved. The eight acres at Casco Circle and its asset to Orono was discussed. It was requested a copy of the deed listing restrictions on Casco Circle be circulated. The Bederwood neighborhood requests were discussed. Philip Bradley and Les Kelley reported on the meeting they attended. It was su�gested that benches be made available at the skating rinks. It was qenerally felt that there was room within our existinQ parks to make ,,� 1 r needed improvements. The Commission will look at signage, benches, shelters, basketbali hoops and playground equipment. Philip Bradley mentioned the importance of keeping in touch with the School Board to make sure we provide adequate team sport facilities and that we also keep trying to satisfy the interest of Orono residents in a Bike Traii. John Gerhardson reported on the problems of serving food at Bederwood and promised to keep the Commission advised. He aiso circulated a draft regarding objections to the Park Dedication Ordinance. It was decided this draft would be reviewed by Commission members and discussed at our next meeting on WednesdaX, Seatember 12. The meeting was adjourned at 9:55 pm. Susan D. W i 1 son Secretary
