CONSULTING ENGINEERS 14000 21st Ave.No./Minneapolis,MN 55447 Phone(612)559-1859 / Fax(612)559-0720 FIELD MEMO DATE: March 1, 1999 TO: Mr. Rich Kieman - KM Building Company c FROM: Mr. Steven Ruesink, P.E. - GME Consultants, Inc . U . RE: Excavation base soil observations/test pit observations for the Service 800 building at 2190 Wayzata Boulevard in Orono, Minnesota GME PROJECT NO. : 8216 TIME: 7 :30 am WEATHER: Cloudy, 30° F PERSONNEL CONTACTED: Mr. Steve Weibel, site superintendent - KM Building Company Don Zappa and Sons Excavating As requested by Mr. Weibel, I visited the site today to observe excavation base soil, and observe test holes excavated around the perimeter of the building. The contractor has stripped off anywhere from 1-1/2 to 2 feet of topsoil over the building footprint . Today, the contractor is working on stripping topsoil from the northern parking area. Based on a paint mark located on a power pole west of the southwest corner of the building, the westerly half of the building is about at top-of-slab elevation (elevation 1014 . 8) with the eastern half of the building at approximately elevation 1012 feet . Based on planned documentation, original grades in this area ranged from elevation 1017 . 5 feet in the northwest corner, to 1014 feet along the east end of the building. The assumed soil bearing pressure for this project, on structural drawings, is 2, 000 psf . Fill placed below footing elevation is to be compacted to 100% of the Standard Proctor dry density, with fill placed above footing, below slab elevation to be compacted to 98% of the Standard Proctor dry density. Four test pits were excavated at the four corners of this building, to explore soil conditions . The information is outlined below. WILLIAM C. KWASNY, P.E. THOMAS P VENEMA, P.E. WILLIAM E. 8LOEMENDAL, RE. GREGORY R. REUTER, PE. CHARLES M. ALLGOOD, P.E. MERVYN MINDESS, P.E. MARK O. MILLSOP, P.G. TIMOTHY F. McGLENNEN STEVEN J. RUESINK, P.E. An Equal Opportunity Employer Mr. Rich Kieman 2 March 1, 1999 GME Project No. 8216 Test Pit 1 (East of Northeast Corner) - Surface Elevation Approximately 1012 feet. 0' - 2 ' - Brown clayey sand/sandy clay fill . SCP test result 3 . 5 tsf . 2 ' - 6' - Brown and gray mottled silty clay, trace sand. SCP test 4 tsf . SCP test result 2 . 5 tsf . 3 ' - 5' - Brown and gray mottled silty clay, trace sand. SCP test results 4 . 0 tsf . Test Pit 3 (West of Southwest Corner) - Surface Elevation Approximately 1016 feet. 0' - 1 . 5' - Surface vegetation and black silty clay topsoil . 1 . 5' - 8 ' (West End) - Brown and gray wet sandy clay fill (existing water main backfill) . 1 . 5' - 2 . 5' (East Side) - Brown clayey sand fill . 2 . 5' - 4 ' (East Side) - Naturally-occurring brown and gray mottled silty clay trace sand. SCP test result 3 . 5 tsf . Test Pit 4 (West of Northwest Corner) - Surface Elevation Approximately 1015 feet. 0' - 3 ' - Brown clayey sand (possible fill) . SCP test 3 . 5 tsf . 3 ' - 4 .5' - Brown and gray mottled silty clay, trace sand. SCP test result 4 . 0 tsf . The contractor has scraped off the topsoil present within the building pad. The base soil was not frozen, and consists of either existing fill or naturally-occurring soil consisting of brown clayey sand/sandy clay. I observed loaded tandem-axle trucks running over the subgrade soil, indicating no deflection and approximately 1/2 inch to 1 inch of rutting. Based on my observations, it is my opinion these soils are suitable for slab support, or placement of fill for slab support . GME CONSULTANTS,INC. Mr. Rich Kieman 3 March 1, 1999 GME Project No. 8216 Based on the test pits, it is my opinion the foundations will be bearing on naturally-occurring silty clay with a trace of sand. Based on SCP testing at the test pit locations, this material should be suitable for the assumed soil bearing value of 2, 000 psf . I recommended that all footings be lowered below the existing fill, to rest on naturally-occurring soil . Based on review of surface contours and available minimal elevation information, frost footings around the perimeter should bear on naturally-occurring soil . I recommend the three interior column pads, designed to rest directly below the slab, be lowered to rest on the naturally-occurring soil, or the existing fill be removed, and fill be placed to re-attain design footing elevation. Mr. Weibel indicated they would be excavating for footings tomorrow, and requested a foundation base soil observation testing visit at 2 : 00 to 2 :30 pm on March 2, 1999 . In reviewing the Special Inspections required for this project and structural drawings, we are to observe reinforcing steel installation during footing construction, perform periodic masonry special inspection, and observe and test welded and bolted connections .
