HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-05-1987 Park Commission Minutes � . � ORONO PARR COMMISSION, JANUARY 5, 1987 ATTENDANCE Terry Morse, Lee Erger, Mariann Kienz ler and Bob Kost were present. John Gerhardson from the Orono City staff was also present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES ApprovaY of minutes from the December l, 1986 Park Commission meeting was postponed until the February 2, 1987 meeting. PARR LANDSCAPING ESTIMATE Bob Kost indicated that the estimated cost for landscape improvements at Livinqston Tower Park could range between $6, 000 and 7 , 000, based on the current concept plan. Kost will meet with John Gerhardson to prepare a bid proposal. ART CENTER SCULPTURE DONATION REQIIEST Terry Morse reported that the Art Center was not interested in donating a scuYpture to the City for the Livingston Tower Park. The Art Center expressed interest in heYping the Park Commission to prepare a "request for design proposal " from area sculptors. Commissioners discussed the use of the "Lions Club" donation for the commissioning of the art piece. Dicsussion W�11 be continued at next meeting. AGENDA/TOPIC ORGANIZER SHEET Terry Morse presented an organizational tooY which he developed. The chart allows for the recording and tracking of various agenda items throughout their various stages over time. The Commissioners discussed the use of the system and unanimously agreed to adopt it. The following items were placed on the 1987 agenda : Hackberry Park Skating Rink request, Livingston Tower Park �andscape improvements, park sculpture commission award, park inspection procedure, park maintenance schedule, Comprehensive Plan review, strategic planning, park promotion/recognition campaign, bike/hike trail system. Agenda was unanimously approved. PARRS PROMOTION Discussion was held regarding various ways to increase pub�ic knowledge and use of Orono parks. Items suggested: publish stories about parks and Park Commission in local paper, develop signs indicating parks, install park name signs in aI1 parks. Mariann KienzYer volunteered to write first article on parks with ice skating facilities. Discussion will be continued at next meeting. 1 r ORONO PARR COMMISSION, JANUARY 5, 1987 MEMORIAL TREES John Gerhardson indicated that he has received requests for permission to donate a tree in memoriaY of deceased relatives, friends, etc. Discussion was held regarding the need for a park policy and guideYines for acceptance of this type of donation. John Gerhardson wi11 try to schedule a representative of the Community Education orgainization to be present a the next regular meeting to explain the program. GREENWAY SOCIETY John Gerhardson reported that Surry Gage of the "Greenway Society" has expressed an interest in becoming involved with the Orono parks. John will distribute copies of the society' s pamphlet at the next meeting. ADJOURNMENT Meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 2nd, 1987 at 7:00 p.m. at the Orono Council Chambers. 2
