SUBJECT: FUTURE OF ORONO PUBLIC GOLF COURSE
CONCLUSION: The Members unanimously support the continued operation
and maintenance of the Orono Public Golf Course.
SUPPORTING OPINIONS & FACTS:
1 . The Members unanimously agree with the Community
Management Plan, June, 1980, Chapter 8 Page #2, Scope #2, which
states:
Park land once acquired becomes the permanent
responsibility of the City, or another government agency for
continuing maintenance expense, and for permanent loss of tax incoRe.
2. The Private Golf Course Policy statement in the
Community Managen:ent Plan, Chapter #8, Page 12, Scope #8, shoulcl
apply to the Orono Public Golf Course. This states: THE CITY WILL
ENCOURAGE RETENTION AND CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE PRIVATE GOLF
COU2SES. These private facilities provide major active recreation in
th` City and in addition provide aesthetic open space and open vistas
to !:he benefit of all adjacent property owners and the public alike.
The City will discourage conversion of these facilities into
non-re.:.reational land use because of the benefit of this recreational
opportui:ity and because the City has limited public services
necessary for accommodating any other use.
3. Financial records indicate that the Golf Course
operates at a profit and does not represent a financial burden to the
City budget.
4. The Golf Course is the City' s largest contiguous
year-round recreational resource.
5. Orono Public Golf Course is historically significant
because it is the first public golf course in the State to use grass
greens.
6. The threat of sale and development of local privately
owned golf courses contributes to the importance of Orono ' s Public
Golf Cours,e. As the privately owned course ' s disappear, dernands on
Orono ' s Course will increase.
7. The Park Commission encourages the study of the Golf
Course to asses current & future user needs and the feasibility of
future improvements.
