The Orono Park Conission met on the above date ATTENDANCE
with the following members present: Chairman
Tomlinson, Berglund, Watson and Peterson. Not -
Present: Erger, Kelley, Lat.rop. Also attending:
John Gerhardson, Public ti'orks Coordinator.
The minutes oP the October meeting were approved. MIivIITES
John Garhardson spoke to the co:rrnission regarding JOHN GERHARDSON REPORT
several subjects with which the comraission is
concerned:
1 . Bederwood Park: ne current and proposed
improvements o t ' s property are now financed
by Block Grant Funds. The original amovnt des-
ignated for Bederwood was $9000. Of this app-
roximately $3000 has been spent. The remaining
scheduled improvements include playground equip-
ment (s-s, slide, climber, ) a baseball backstop,
and some tres plantirg.
In order to build a Babe Ruth size field on this
property Mr. Gerhardson would like city council
approval, so that he may do exra work, iP required,
to expand the field to that size. The comnission
expects the participants in various baseball programs
who desire to use this field, to provide some assis-
tance in physically completing the Pield to suit their
requirements. -
2. Regarding volunteer help on cornn; ty pro jects,
Mr. Gerhardson announced that he is setting up a
procedure whereby coordination between the volunteers
and the city can be affected,
3. P'k Dedication Fznd: This fl.ind is collected Prom
davelopers an indivi uals any time a property is sub-
divided. e curret council is of the opinion that
the fznd is to be held for iture use, in concert with
the feeling that no additional par$ property is needed
in the city at this time.
?. SurrIInit Park (Da ton Pro ert ) : T'ne transfer of
title to this property is eing negotiated by the citp
attorney. The donor desired to add a 90 ' wide strip
to the donated property, but would have had to get
council e$ceptions to the size of the remaining lot.

4. (con't. )
ne city council reected this additional property,
and asked for the title to be transferred as origin-
ally proposed.
The house on this property has been vandalized, so
to prevent fa.rther datnage, and to reduce the possi-
biliy of some personal in ju.ry claims I`r. Gerhardson
has asked the Long Lake Fire Dept. if they could use
it for a fire department practice. They would charge
$200.00 to do so.
IIntil the title transi'er is complete, and the council
gives approval to do so, the Park Comm3ssion is not
doing any planning for Surunit Park.
5. Public Propert,y on Forest Lake: It has been brought
to the comrissions attention that a property on Forest
Lake, with 150 ' of shoreline, is possibly a Public Property
used at present by area residents. IIr. Ger•nardson is going
to have Alan OZson, City Planner, check on the legal status
of this property.
6. DNR Propert9 (old Creamery site) : This parcel, adjacent
to Bederwood Park, has been the su ject of a request by the
city to transfer it to city ownership. The DNR has notified
us that legislation is required to do this. Johr Gerhardson
has already concacted Representative Bob Searles to initiate
this legislation.
ie city has acquired a ta..ar-forfeiture parcel TAX FORFEITURE PARCEL
near the Navarre shopping area. A proposed
use is to move the small playground (Daniels
Playground) Prom behind the Navarre shopping
center to this site. Council direction ,rill
be sought.
Peggy Watson will attend the council meeting,
on November 21 , 1978, to diacuss the inclusion
of the larger, Babe Ruth baseball field in the
improvements for Bederwood Park.
