held Sept. 5, 1978:
The Orono Park Commission met on tne above date
with the following members present: Chairrian
Tomlinson, Kelley, Berglund, Peterson. Not
Present: La.throp, �ger, Watson. Also attending,
Jo'nn Gernardson, Orono Public Works Coordinator,
and Dr. Jo'nn 4Jatson, representing tne Nort=� l�inne-
tonka Baseball Assoc.
The minutes of the August meeting were approved. MINUI�S APPRO V-'�.D
Dr. Watson gave a background description of tne DR. WATSON ON BASEBALL PARK
baseball situation in the Maple Plain-Long Lake-
Orono area. 0 nly one full size field suitable
for play by teenage and adult baseball pla�=ers
exists in the communities, at the Orono school
compleX. A minimum of $ teams will be trying
to schedule tnis field next summer for practice
and games. Dr. Watson said his association
would like the proposed field at Bederwood Park
to be a full size field. This means 90foot base
1 s, and280 ' to 325 ' outfield lines.
The commi.ssioners, Mr. Gernardson and Dr. Watson �
traveled to the Brderwood site to further discuss
the layout of the park and baseball field. The
general location previously designated, on the
low area near the south-central portion of the
property, was deemed to be suitable, provided the
level area can be extended to the North a little,
and proper drainage can be attained. The park has
been plowed, additional earth has been moved, and
the area will be smoothed and seeded this fall, in-
cluding the baseball field.
Dr. Watson has agreed to list the requirements for
a satisfactory baseball field, as well as otner per-
tinent information for presentation by the Park
Cormnission to the council.
John Gerhardson noted tn.at he is limited by funding
for current park improvements. This prompted further
discussion of the use oP park dedication funds, some
of which could be used to speed improvements at Beder-
wood.
Ty Commission was informad of the placenent of a PLkC�I�NT OF SIGNS
s��_i at Antoine Park, which will be copied, in style,
for other parks in the cotnmunity. The commissioners
were asked to look at this sign to see if it is accept-
ab1e.

The Commission discussed the name of the property PARK NAME
dc���ted b� Bruce Dayton. Roland Berglund and Les
K ey recalled that it used to be called the Sum-
mit Park Resort, and suggested we revert to that
name.
The following resolution was passed: RESOLUTION PASSED
Resolved: It is recomr7ended to the Orono City
Council tnat the Dayton property on Long Lake be
named Sur�rnit Park.
The coramission discussezi briefly, tne recreational RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS
programs ( lea�ue sports, instruction, etc. ) in
surrounding communities and organizations. The
question of whether or not there are gaps to fill
in these programs has yet to be de�ermined.
