Regular meeting of the Orono Park CoYrnnission f
held August 1 , 1 978: ATTENDANCE
The Orono Park Corrmlission met on the above
date with the following members present:
Chairman Tomlinson, Kelley, Watson and Peterson.
Not present: Berglund, Erger, and Lathrop. i
The minutes of the July meeting will be Qorrected MINIITES APPROVED
to indicate that a ballfield is not considered
appropriate for the Dayton property. Minutes were
approved as corrected.
A review of the corranissions tour and inspection TOUR REVIEWED
of the High.wood access led to the following resolu-
tions:
Resolved, that because, fran a recreational
point of view, the Highwood access is not
suitable for any development, the park comm-
ission recormiends that, aside from a general
clean up, no funds be expended for recreational
development of the property.
Motion by Kelley, second by Watson, passed.
'. lack of any progress in the development of BEDERWOOD PARK
Bederwood Park was discussed. �ie cammission
would like to see thi s si te developed thi s fall
s o that it can be used next summer. Inspection
by individual coYrnnissioners has determined that
one Babe Rut�i baseball field is all that is feas-
able on the site, and that it should be on the
North (higher) portion of the park. Because park
planning has been handled on an irregular basis
the commission discussed and drew up the following
resolutions regarding Bederwood as well as other
parks:
WHERE AS: Park development is imminent at
Bederwood and Long Lake (Dayton) parks, as
well as othsr properties and,
WHERE AS: professional planning is essential
for good park property utilization,
THEREFORE; Be it resolved that the immediate
hiring of a professional park planning con-
sultant be reco�nended to the city council
to be paid for from the park fund, pursuant
to the city resolution r�675, dated April 12,
1976.
Motion by Kelley, second by Watson, passed.
" Lher discussion of park funding included the fact PARK FUNDING
Ul1C�.l� as of August 1 , 1978, the park f�,ind has a balance
of $76,800. Proper application of these funds will be
a prame point of discussion at the September meeting of
thi s c oxnmi s si on.

1 . The Council has acted to accept the Dayton
property for Park and recreational use. A •
name for the park must be found.
2. The legal transfer of the title to the
Bederwood property, to the city, has been
completed.
3. The legal transfer of the DNR property,
adjacent to Bederwood Park, is in process
at the DNR.
1.�.. The council has acted to approve the grading
of part of Baker Park to accomodate a bike
. trail around the park.
5. At the September meeting of the commission
a sub-committee will be formed to study the
various recreational programs offered by
adjacent communities and otner governmental
and social agencies. This is with a view to
helping us decide if any programs are 1�ckin,
that the city should be providing.
