HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-11-1978 Park Commission Minutes _,. - CITY OF ORONO ' PARK COI'iISSION Park Commission meeting of July 11 , 1 978. Attending were, Lee Tomlinson, Les Kelly, Peggy Watson, Barbara Peterson and Lee Erger. Absent : Walt Lathrop, and Roland Berglund. The Park Commission conducted this meeting while on a tour of the various park properties in tne city. Below are general comments from coirmiission members re- garding each property. 1 . Orono/Lon Lake Beach. (Dayton Property) The area seems large enough f or a T-Ball or Little League Field if parking areas are properly arr- anged. Sorie of the Beauti£ul old trees on the groperty must be saved. A line of guard-rail posts and a lockable gate must be installed to p revent all night parking. The beach is beautiful, hard sand out to about 1.0 ' or 50 ' from snore, according to the current tenant, and the water is qu_te clear. No serious flooding problems wsrH evident, in spite of a heavy rain about !. days earlier. 2. Hackberr,y Park: Newly transplanted trees are a definite asset to the park, grass is coming along well. is particular park, with the baseball diamond, is in use constantly, and will be used for soccer thi s fall. 3. Bederwood Park: (Stubbs Bay) Area looks large enough for two ball fields, one of which should be large enough for Babe Ruth League Teams. In case only one field can be build, it should be Babe Ruth League size. Woods on Northwest corner should be fixed up as picnic area. Relatively level area along Stubb s Bay road should be desi- gnated for tennis courts. Some considerations, and cost estimates, should be made for providing restrooms on this site, large well exists on property already. 1.. Hihwood Lake Access : We walked up and down this access and talked with a local citizen about it. The access is quite steep, with mature trees all along its length. IInderbrush has over grown most of the access. Any type of beautification or permanent landscaping would be very expensive and would require timber and/or rock structures to prevent erosion. (the access is a storm water run off for the area. ) General cleanup of the access is reconended, removin.g var- ious weeds and trash and a junk car that is at the top of the access. 5. Sand,y Beach: (closed at the time of our tour due to extremely high water floating away the dock sections. ) Area seemed quite clean, and cared for. Sod on new landscape berm is too dry. 5. Antoine Park: (Fagerness Point) Playground equipment is installed and in use. Mowing was apparently late, cuttings looked like a hay crop. .. , i The minutes of the June meetng of the MINUTES ' commission were approved. Meeting waa adjourned.
