Under LA?1►CON, the priority is reRional si�:�ificance. ?Tnder �Iatural Resour.c�e;�� „ th� nriority is acauisition of land.. By re�ional si�nificance , they mean the number of ncople outsidc the tax base using tiic facility. One of thc jobs of the State Planning Agency is to correlate aIl axeas of government to �aork tonetner towards tlie �evelopment of ot�t�?oor recreation, s.uc>i as : ��Ietropolitan government , Iiennepin County Par?: Reservc , Local , County, State, anc? Private. To be eli�ib�le , a government mt�st have a firre- year plan that coincides ivith tli� :�Iinnesota State plan. ��tr. Barry Peterson spoke on the `Ietro Coitiicil. He reported that a i�Ietronolitan Develonment guide �aill soon be sent to each government, Recreation components that the i•letro Council are most interestec� in are : seleetion of large open space areas ; water access areas which shoul� be preservecZ, s�ioLtld be 50- 500 acres (a park more than an access) ; r��ional trails . Priorities for the i�letro Coi�ncil are : projects of 'ietrop�litan siguificance that are programraed in the `tetropolitan �?evelopnent Guic�c ; projects of local significance , not in conflict with the "�tetropolitan Guic?e ; projects of local sic;nificance not included in plan. Besides the above mentionec� spea?:ers , t:iere was valvable time spent on public cor�munication a.nd tl�e details of fillinR o«t all of the necesszry forms . I had lunch with `tr. Barry Peterson, lssistant director of nl�.nning for the `•tetropolitan Council , �vho t��as very interested in nossibl� � acc{uisition of Big Island (it fits their first t�ao recreation components) and said it has alreac�y been cliscizsseci amon? them an� su�g�sted possibl� coiitacts for us to ma?:e, I also tall:ed ivith 'ir. Tom Cla�vson , from t}Ze office of I.Jrban Affairs , �aho said iie would be hapny to mcet with us in preparing a fiv�-year plan. Eie stated �vc nced cost fi�;ures , arca maps , and potential ideas before he can bc of n�:lp to us . TIJO things necessary be£ore ive can apply for any Recreation Grant are : a five-year detail�cl. plan and a source of reventte far matc.iinR funds . This was a very valuable rneeting for someone from our group to attcnc�.
