Dear Mr. Ward
I was at the cemetery last night and I respectfully disagree with your comments regarding Union Cemetery. The
grounds have been mowed and the grave stones are NOT impossible to find due to "brush and weeds". I would be
happy to meet you at the cemetery if you wish to discuss this matter further. The cemetery is mowed every 7 - 10 days,
depending on weather conditions, and the gravestones are "weed whipped" every other mowing cycle.
The Memorial Day service remains a well attended event for the Long Lake community, and I hope that you are able to
attend the service this coming Monday. I trust that you will find the grounds to be in suitable condition for the event.
With Best Regards,
Liz Olson

Mr. Ward,
This cemetery is in the City of Orono, not in the City of Long Lake. I am forwarding on your concerns
on to an appropriate City of Orono representative.

I recently visited the Union Cemetery in Long Lake and was appalled by the conditions. I was born and raised
on the Clasen farm (J.J. Clasen) on County Road 6. The other side of my family was the Dickey farm (Guy
Dickey) on Browns Road. Clasen Lake and Dickey Lake are both named after these pioneers. It was almost
impossible to find headstones due to brush and weeds. This disrespect to these founding family's and the
condition of the cemetery is deplorable. There are many veterans that died defending this nation buried in this
cemetery as well as a great number of pioneers that helped the area become what it is today. As a youth I

always looked forward to marching with the Boy Scouts to the Memorial Day ceremonies. The cemetery was
always spotless and the ceremonies were well attended. I will appreciate hearing from you regarding any
plans for the Union Cemetery. Sincerely, Murray D. Ward
