RE: MCWD Permit Application No. 04-485: 925 Old Long Lake Rd,Orono
Dear Mr.Anderson:
During a recent final inspection of the project located at 925 Old Long Lake Rd, it has
come to the attention of the District that wetland buffers on your property have been
impacted by storage of materials. Buffers are established to reduce the adverse effects of
human activities on the wetland or surface water by protecting water quality, providing
wildlife habitat, reducing direct human disturbance, and maintaining biological diversity.
Per Minnehaha Creek Watershed District Rule D: Wetland Protection, Paragraph 4:D
Buffer vegetation shall not be cultivated, cropped, pastured, mowed, fertilized,
subject to the placement of mulch or yard waste, or otherwise disturbed, except
for periodic cutting or burning that promotes the health of the buffer. No new
structure or hard surface shall be placed within a buffer.
This area will continue to be monitored by District staff to ensure that the established
buffers in this area are not continually impacted. Storage of a large pile of mulch and
stones is a clear violation of the Watershed District Rules and enforcement will be
pursued in the event of non-compliance.
o Stockpiles of mulch and rocks are requested to be removed from the
wetland buffer area as listed above.
o Stabilize the buffer with native vegetation consistent with type of
vegetation present before disturbance.
The section of wetland buffer closest to your home shows many diverse plants and
shrubs. Please maintain and if additional vegetation is desired, please submit a planting
plan to MCWD
There are many resources for homeowners interested in improving both the quality and
aesthetic value of these buffers. Enclosed is a memo regarding landscape improvements
using native plants which lists some of these resources. If you have any questions
regarding MCWD Rules or possible landscaping alternatives to mowing please contact
me at 952-471-0590 Ext. (205)
Thank you in advance for your cooperation on this issue.
Sincerely,
Angela Hammers
District Technician
