Regarding exiting from the upper level, the occupant load as designed requires 2 exits from the
space. The I.B.C. provides 3 ways to determine occupant load and states in section 1003.2.2 that
the occupant load shall be established by the largest number computed. Therefore your choices are
to redesign to reduce the occupant load or to provide a second exit. Regarding the elevator
question, the shaft does need to be rated but elevator enclosers are not required. However the state
building code division requires draft curtains, smoke detection and some other items (see attached
memo) I will be on vacation until 3-22-04. While I'm gone the other inspector Bruce Vang may be
able to assist you with questions.
