Applications for septic system permits may be mailed or submitted in person at the City Offices; however, permits will not be mailed out. The permit must be picked up in person at the City Offices and work must not begin unless the permit card is on the job site. 2. Permits will be issued only to contractors holding a City of Orono Septic System Installers License. 3. All work must be done in accordance with the approved septic system design. Design reports are not considered approved unless accompanied by the "City of Orono Septic System Approval" cover sheet signed by the City Inspector. 4. The following inspections will be required for all septic systems: A. Pre-installation site inspection to include inspector, installer, and general contractor. B. Tank installation prior to covering. C. Drainfield trench installation prior to covering. For mounds, inspection is required after rough-up but prior to sand placement (sand will be jar tested for silt content), and again during pressure distribution piping installation in the rock bed. D. Final inspection to verify proper final cover depths and to verify that all pump station (where required) components are functional and comply with codes. 5. Individual holding MPCA Installer Certificate shall be present during inspections. A 24- hour notice is required for all inspections. NOTE: Applicant must initial all spaces. This is a design approval form which must accompany the site plan. A permit must be issued to a licensed septic contractor prior to installation. A list of currently licensed septic contractors is enclosed. NOTICE TO INSTALLERS: Any changes to the approved plans and specs must have prior approval of the Inspector (473-7357). Call for inspections 24 hours in advance. ALL DRAINFIELD AREAS MUST BE FENCED OFF prior to building site excavation and fencing must remain in place until final site grading. Approval to pour footings will not be granted until the Inspections Department has verified that primary and alternate sites are adequately protected. NO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC OF ANY KIND (cars, trucks, earth moving equipment, etc.) is allowed within 20' of tested drainfield sites either before or after system construction. Therefore another site :-as t;.ested todetermine what type of .system could be installed and still compIy •with the local codes. L • I. The average .percolation rate an the area that was tested had an average percolation :rate of 24. 7 min/in. and the depth to mottled soil was at 2$-30 inches . * Mottled sthil is consider t}ie high seasonal water ( saturated soil level) that exist during the wet seasons ( Spring and Fall) . The City of ;.Orono ON-Site Sewage_ Codes require !that the minnmum depth to mottled. soil be at 5.4 .inches or deeper before a standard trench system can be installed . Therefore with the above information the only type. of system that can be installed orl this site is a pressurized mound system. • . 1•he size of mound system needed for a 4 bedroom home( based on '600 gallon/day daily wateriuseage and a perc;. rate of 24. 7 min/in. the sizing factors) would be 75 ft. along on the^ upslope , 91 ft. long on the downslope, and 38 ft . . wide. The size' of the rock bed needed would be 10 ft. wide by 55 ft, long ( 550 sq. ft..) or29 tons of rock. * see the enclosed design data for the specifications for the proposed system. I; This mound must be pressurized therefore a pump tank ( 1000 gallon) and a pump(40 g;•p.:m. -160 gal/cycle- 4 cycles/day) must be installed . An alarm system ( both a sound and a light alarm ) must be installed in the house to indicate ' .pump failure. s • Two 1000 gallon sealed setic tanks must be used , these tanks must be pumped out every 2-.3 years. All construction traffic must be kept of the proposed site to avoid . compaction .of the soil which will result in ruining the site, therefore the site should ,he roped off by the owner or the builder. • • Site Evaluator ..
