SP TESTING INC. Steven B.Schirmers -951 Katydid Lane NE-St. Michael, MN 55376 Cert. No 627 -- State License#394 - Phone 763-497-3566 - Fax 763-497-5011 www.sptesting.wastewater@comcast.net- schirmerswastewater.com September 17, 2019 Don Adams 200 Truffala Trail Orono, MN A Compliance inspection was completed for the existing on-site sewage treatment system located on this property for the sale of the home. The system consists of 2- 1250 gallon septic tanks, 1-1250 gallon pump tank & a pressurized mound system with a 10' x 51' rock bed, built later than 1996 for a 4 bedroom home. Soil boring #1 found mottled soil (redox features) at 2.5' into the original soil & the original soil at elev. 103.2 & the bottom of the rock bed at elev. 104.7 leaving 1.5' of sand below the rock bed & a 4' separation from the bottom of the rock & redox features. Soil boring #2 found mottled soil at 2.3' into the original soil & the original soil at elev.103.6 & the bottom of the rock bed at elev. 104.7 leaving 1.1' of sand & a 3.4' separation. This system meets the required 3' separation from the bottom of the rock bed. Soil probing into the downslope toe of the mound found the sand to be hydraulically overloaded & very near surface discharging. This system has the potential to be an imminent threat to public health & safety & must be repaired or disconnected within 10 months or as the City of Orono determines. The sand is ponding in the mound due to an iron filter installed in the home in early spring. Iron filters are known throughout the Industry to cause problems in septic systems & should never be discharged into them. Also drainage was diverted towards the upslope toe of the mound not allowing the water to drain away, so ponding of rain water is occurring also causing the sand to be wet. The proposal is to install a catch basin & drain tile to divert the run-off. It should be diverted towards the east. The iron filter must be removed from the system & diverted elsewhere or removed all together. Once the iron filter has been removed & the drainage diverted away, the system could be monitored quarterly for 2 years to see if the system will recover & the system could be re-evaluated & made compliant. For the sale of the home, the replacement cost would need to be put into an escrow account. An alternate site for a new system has been identified. 3 soil borings were completed. A design has not been completed at this time. The tank report was received on 9-3-19. The tanks were pumped by Kothrade Sewer , Water & Excavating & were found to be compliant. The manhole riser on the pump tank should have 10" added to the riser. Nothing other than gray water (laundry, showers etc.) human waste & toilet tissue should be disposed of into the septic tanks. Garbage disposals are not recommended due to adding more solids & fine solids passing through into the system. Iron filters are also not recommended & should be diverted out of the system. Excessive amounts of soaps, antibacterial soaps, cleaning agents, shower cleaners used every shower & chlorine agents may kill the bacteria you need living in the system. Additives are not recommended. Recommend to pump & clean you tanks through the manhole by a certified pumper every 2 years. Check with your pumper to set up a schedule. Steven B.
