October 15, 1998 REVISED 10/20/98 David Earley, Contractor 4702 69'Ave.No. Brooklyn Center,MN 55429 Re: Tim&Jill Bresnahan Residence 1500 Vine Place Orono, MN Commission No. 98236 Gentlemen: The purpose of this letter is to report the findings of a structural engineering design for remodeling at the Bresnahan residence. ASSIGNMENT J. H. Dahlmeier Engineering Inc. has been retained to provide a structural engineering design for a new beam between the living room and south family room of the structure at 1500 Vine Place, Orono, MN as directed by David Earley, contractor for the project. BACKGROUND David Earley is the contractor for remodeling of this residence. The owners wish to remove the bearing wall between the living room and the south family room. OBSERVATIONS AND COMMENTS 1. A site visit was conducted by John H. Dahlmeier of J. H. Dahlmeier Engineering Inc. on October 13, 1998 to review existing conditions. 2. The design conditions are as follows: a. Shore all existing construction as necessary for protection of existing structure. b. New beam will be approximately 15 feet long spanning from exterior corner to interior wall. C. At the exterior corner, a steel column exists from footing to first floor framing. At the inside corner,a steel column exists from footing to first floor framing. d. The beam is to be two 1-3/4" x 11-1/4" microlams or three 1-3/4" x 9 1/2" microlams. e. At the exterior, the beam is to be supported by five 2" x 4" nailed together and supported on the steel column and/or carried all the way to the footing. Attach beam and column with metal plates(Simpson type). f. The interior end of the column is to be supported in a similar fashion on the steel column. Blocking as necessary to be provided in each case. g- The two ply construction or the three ply construction are to be nailed and/or bolted together in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. 4.
