Test Procedure and Results
ASTM E 1494-12(Standard Practice for Encapsulation Testing of Friable Asbestos-Containing
Surfacing Materials)
Qualifications
The test methods in this practice require disturbance of asbestos-containing materials.
Activities that disturb asbestos containing materials are subject to regulations of the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) and other jurisdictions including certain state agencies.
The test method described in Annex Al to determine the adhesive and cohesive properties
of encapsulated surfacing material can result in a release of asbestos-containing debris.
Persons conducting this test must have the appropriate credentials and training to clean up
the debris.

Annex 1 (Test Method to Determine the Cohesion/Adhesion Properties of Friable Spray
or Trowel Applied Asbestos-Containing Surfacing Materials)
Test Preparation
The Duct Armour product was troweled onto (4) 12" by 12" Hardie Panel Cement Backer
Board. The product was allowed to cure in a 70°F/50% relative humidity environment for
24 hours. Gorilla Epoxy was prepared and placed on the surface of the Duct Armor coating
and a 3° by 4° steel plate was placed on top of the epoxy with approximately 5 lbs of force.
The assembly was allowed to cure for an additional 24 hours.
Test Procedure
The 12" by 12" assemblies were placed on the bottom of a universal tensile testing fixture.
The panels were secured by placing W thick steel plates that over lapped the edges of the
backer board panel by 3/4". The 3" by 4" steel plate adhered to the Duct Armor coating was
then connected to the top of the universal test fixture. The rate of tension used for this
testing was 1 in/ min.

The DSTTm system is a proprietary coating spray-applied to the interior of sound, existing,
underground noncombustible (concrete or metal) ductwork in accordance with the manufacturer's
proprietary process by installers trained and certified by the manufacturer. When tested according to
ASTM E 84 at a 0.025-inch thickness (0.635 mm), the material demonstrated a maximum flame
spread index of 45 and a maximum smoke developed index of 35. Laboratory analysis provided
indicated Envirolinerlm has the same or lower ASTM E 84 characteristics as materials allowed for
underground ducts in IRC M1601.1.2 and IMC Section 603.8, and as an alternate under UMC Section
105. The existing underground ductwork must have been installed in accordance with the applicable
code, and be in sound condition.
Conditions of Listing:
1. Designs using EnvirolinerTm must be limited to underground air duct systems with a maximum air
temperature of 150°F (66`C) at the discharge of the unit entering the duct system. Duct sizing
must be in accordance with the applicable code.
2. EnvirolinerTm coatings must be installed on ducts which are either underground or embedded
within concrete slabs. The duct must not be used in exposed or aboveground applications.
3. The existing uncoated air duct system must have been sized and installed in accordance with the
applicable code.
4. The DSTTm EnvirolinerTm is manufactured under a quality control program with annual
surveillance inspections by ICC-ES.
