Guardrail Height
HGA Commission Number 1740-001-00
Dear Lyle:
I am writing to follow-up and document our phone conversation from last week. I called you to
discuss the required guardrail height for residential use in the City of Orono. You stated that we
could use a 36" guardrail height in lieu of the required 42" height based on the following
guidelines from the 1994 UBC:
509.2 Height. The top of guardrails shall not be less than 42" (1067 mm) in height.
EXCEPTIONS: 1. The top of guardrails for Group R, Division 3 (Residential) and
Group M, Division 1 Occupancies and interior guardrails within individual dwelling
units, Group R, Division 3 congregate residencies and guest rooms of Group R, Division
1 Occupancies may be 36 inches (914 mm) in height.
Sincerely,
