The results of our observation are presented herein. 3 bi A. The building is an irregular shaped multi-story residential home. For the purpose of this report, the home faces west onto Tonkawa Road. According to information provided, the home was built circa 1970. B. On September 21, 2016, a thunderstorm reportedly affected the surrounding area. Lightning struck the roof ridge at the north end of the house. The lightning strike traveled through the north window wall and terminated at a wired smoke detector. The termination caused the smoke detector to explode into the house. C. Pie was subsequently retained by Chubb to investigate this matter. CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS 6275 Joyce Drive,Suite 0• CO 80403-7541 303.552.0177(tel)-1.866.SS2.S246 •• 303.552.0178(fax) www.pieglobal.com Observation Report Gage aQ 460 Tonkawa Road 010 Pie's scope of work was to perform the following regarding the Gage residence located at 460 Tonkawa Road Long Lake,Minnesota: A. Travel to and from site in Long Lake,Minnesota. B. Meet for inspection on Monday,September 26 at 2pm. C. Observe structure for reported damage from lightning strike. D. Provide verbal and written report of findings with recommendations for repair. The scope of our observation included the following: September 23,2016 Discussion with the adjuster,Mr.Tony Brian D.Erickson,P.E., Skajewski,Chubb,to review the assignment RRC and determine the scope of work at the start of the project. September 26,2016 Public records search of the property as Shannon W.Pierce,P.E. available on the Hennepin County website. September 26,2016 Observations, measurements, and photographic documentation performed. r A. Pie conducted the site evaluation on September 26, 2016. Mr. Tony Skajewski, from Chubb, Mr. Steven Steinborn, caretaker representing the homeowner, and Mr. Greg Newtson, from Giertsen, were present during the site visit. B. Lightning struck the roof ridge at the north end of the house. The lightning strike traveled through the north window wall and terminated at a wired smoke detector mounted to a vertical window mullion on the north wall. 1. The room at the north end of the house is considered to be a living/sitting room. a. The room has a vaulted ceiling/roof,and is approximately 16-feet tall from the floor to the roof ridge beam. 1. The timber roof rafters are approximately 6-inch by 8-inch (nominal)members spaced at approximately 4-feet,6-inches apart. 2. The vaulted timber roof rafters are supported by presumably wood-framed walls(low)and a timber ridge beam(high). 3. Painted wood deck boards are fastened to the top of the timber rafters and are exposed to below. Pie Consulting&Engineering Page 2 of 5 MN716226.00(000) Observation Report Gage Q 460 Tonkawa Road 4. The roof above the wood deck boards consists of wood shingles and is assumed to be insulated with additional 2x members. 5. The north window wall at the living/sitting room consists of full- height laminated veneer lumber (LVL) structural mullions. The LVL beams frame into the LVL mullions and are connected with metal-plate fasteners/hangers. 2. Damaged wood shingles and wood soffit were observed near the lightning strike location at the roof ridge at the north end of the house. 3. A large window at the north window wall was shattered by the lightning strike. 4. The northernmost timber roof rafter at the west slope of the north room was pushed inward approximately 2-inches at the top of the member. This was most likely due to the energy impact of the lightning and/or the explosion of the smoke detector. 5. The vertical structural window mullions and horizontal members at the north window wall consist of LVL members. The smoke detector was mounted to the eastern vertical LVL mullion. a. Blackened and splintered wood in the eastern vertical LVL mullion was observed near the explosion location. b. Melted and broken electrical wires were observed near the explosion location. 6. Scuffs were observed in the wood ceiling/deck boards, timber rafters, and wood trim. These scuffs were presumably caused by flying debris after the smoke detector exploded. 7. No other structural damage or distress was observed. Pie Consulting&Engineering Page 3 of 5 MN716226.00(000) Observation Report Gage @ 460 Tonkawa Road A. It is Pie's determination, based on a reasonable degree of engineering certainty, that the energy from the lightning strike exploded the smoke detector mounted on the LVL window mullion. The structural damage from the explosion is limited to the LVL mullion it was mounted to.The lightning strike also caused cosmetic damage to the roofing, glass windows, and interior finishes. 1. The damaged full-height structural LVL window mullion should be removed and replaced. a. Temporary shoring by the contractor is recommended. b. The connection of the LVL beams fastened to this LVL mullion should be restored. Though no damage to the beams were observed on site, the contractor should verify that the beams were not affected by the explosion. C. All members and connections should be restored/replaced to their original configuration. 2. Damaged roof shingles should be removed and replaced. The contractor should verify that the underlying structure/roofing was not affected by the lightning strike. 3. It was discussed on site that the window sealants on the remaining windows that are intact may have been compromised. Therefore, in addition to the shattered window, all windows should be removed and replaced at the north window wall of the living/sitting room. 4. The northernmost timber roof rafter at the west slope of the living/sitting room should be repositioned in the original location and re-fastened to the surrounding members. 5. Scuffed members at the interior should be repaired or replaced. B. The repair recommendations included herein should be utilized for conceptual and estimating purposes and not interpreted as a repair design for which Pie Consulting & Engineering is the engineer-of-record. Any repairs should be conducted by a licensed and qualified general contractor in accordance with the requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
