Re: Soils Inspection and Compaction Control
Proposed Single Family Residence
Lot 4 Block 4 Sugar Woods
Hennepiii Co (Orono), Minresota
Please be advised that I did, between 30 September 1997 and 5 Uctober 1997,
inspect excavations and perform field and laboratory tests upen compacted
fiil at the above referenced locations. The purpose was to assure conform—
2nce with minimum Building Code provisons. Please accept this letter ar.d
attachments as my report of work accomplished.
I was summoned to the site when it became obvious that, due to the eleva—
tion difference between garage footings and existing terrain, cornbined with
the discovered depth af required excavations, contrailed fill would be nec—
essary below at least below garage footings and, to a lesser extend, below
residence area footings.
...
There were no soil bcrings on the site prior to this work. Rather. , minimum
Building Code requirements were elected by you to be followed (footings or
controlled fill to rest upon naturally occurring mineral soi1, firm enough
to support the werk, compaction to be at least 950 of Standard Maximum Den—
• sity).
The inspection of the garage area and a portion af the residence area was
performed by myself on 30 September 1997. I verified that all uncontrolled .'
fi11, buried 'numus and topsoil was removed from ar. evrsized building pad
area. Base soil is a lean clay, gray, mottled, hard in lower elevations,
with a medium condition prevalent in upper 2evels. I probed the bottom of
the excavation at several points to assure that no "false hottoms" were Qi
present. Water was not present in the excavation.
Refer to the enclosed sketch for a recording of base of excavation eleva—
ti.ons and oversizing pravided as a function of garage location. Horizontal
and vertical control was provided mostly hy you. I assigned, fr keeping
track of density test levels, lOU.UC as the bottom of proposed garage foct— ,R
ngs. Based upon these recordirigs, oversizing is adequate for ali footings.
In the residence area, since natural mineral soil quickly rises to th= south,
there will be very little fi.li over mcst of this area. Hence, I oniy casually
nspected this area, and did not measure cversizing, except for applicable
zones near the garage.

Page 2
Between 30 September and 5 October 1°97 I took nine density tests, in—
cluding three retests, using the sand cone method, on fill that was ap—
plied for footing support. The fill material changed considerably over
the course of the project, so three proctor tests were nece.ssary. Test
results are enclosed. Ncte that, initially, density tests failed. After
re—excavation and recompacting, adjusting compaction methods as necessary,
a11 tests met minimum Building Code standards (equal to or greater than
95% of Standard Maximum Density).
Therefore, it is likel_y that adeGuate site preparation has been performed,
that base soils are suitable to support the work, and that fill, at least
to a level equal to the bottoms of garage footings, has been adequately
compacted. I recommend cor.struction using standard footings.
The limitations of this investigation are essentiaZly as per notations on
the density test sheet. Due to the nature f soil engineering in general,
no warranty or guarantee of the site is made or implied.
If you have any questions on this project, do not hesitate to contact me
at your convenience.
Respectfully submitted,
