Based on these conditions, our recommendations for the area as follows: 1) Slope should be stabilized using either double-sided wood fiber blanket or coconut fiber blanket. The straw blanket shown on the plan does not provide enough stabilization with slopes as steep as those on this site. . (See MnDOT Seeding Manual 2000 if needed.) 2) The blanket needs to be installed carefully, using the manufacturer's directions. Specifically, the leading edge (at the top of the slope) needs to be trenched in, using a 6" trench that is back-filled and compacted. The blanket needs to be installed perpendicular to the contours. It needs to be adequately stapled, based on the manufacturer's directions for steep slopes—this step is often not followed adequately at installation. 3) The contractor/owner needs to identify a seed mix that is suitable to shady conditions. The proposed seed mix species list should be submitted, and reviewed by the City. Most wildflower mixes or MnDOT native seed mixes are designed for sunny conditions. 4) Annual rye grass is shown as a cover crop. Annual rye is suitable only with spring plantings. If planting occurs in the fall, another cover crop needs to be selected.
