Description of Waste Water Treatment System
This site is an existing home built in 1966. The home has a failed septic system due to soil
separation and tank integrity. The existing tanks will need to be dug up, pumped and
abandoned 2-1000 gallon septic tanks will need to be installed along with a 1000 gallon pump
tank to lift effluent to the proposed mound The mound is proposed south of the home in the
wooded portion of the lot. A few trees are in the way and will need to be cut down. The
proposed mound will have a 2 foot sand lift with a 10x37.5' rockbed. From the pump tank
effluent will be lifted 170 ft to the mound. A portion of the supply line will be installed under the
asphalt driveway. This section of the supply line MUST be insulated. (insulated pipe or foam
sheeted insulation) Installer to ensure supply line has good fall from mound back to tank
especially under driveway. A portion of the asphalt driveway will have to be removed in order to
install supply line. A flow measurement device must be installed on the pump tank.
This new on-site sewage treatment system is designed for a 3 bedroom home, Type 1 system in
accordance with the MPCA Chapter 7080 and local ordinances.
The soils on this site are loamy. The periodically saturated soils were located after going to a
depth of 14 inches. This will lead 12 inches of usable soil underneath the mound with a 2 foot
sand lift. Therefore providing a 36 inch separation for the treatment of effluent above the
periodically saturated soils.
2-1000 gallon tank will need to be installed along with a 1000 gallon pump tank to lift the
sewage to the treatment area. The power supply and switches must be located outside the
manhole and pumping chamber in a weather proof enclosure. A warning device must also be
installed with audio/visual alerts. The supply line must have drain back to the pumping chamber.
From the pump tank sewage will be pumped approximately 170 feet to the mound. There will be
3- 2" pipes each 3 feet apart inside the 10" by 37 5' rockbed. The mound will have a total
footprint of 54' by 78' with 10 percent slope underneath it.
All tank manholes should be brought to grade upon completion of tank installation, inspection
ports for the distribution boxes should also be at grade upon completion
Keep all vehicles and construction equipment off septic area. Rutting and/or compacting the
soil wil change the percolation rates and may lead to system failure.
Homeowner to verify all property lines.
Elevations are referenced to Bench Mark on the asphalt next to sidewalk of home.
