A site investigation was completed for the existing pressurized mound system located on
this property.
The existing mound system is surface discharging with the rock bed hydraulically
overtoaded. The system was investigated in 1997 and was overloaded at that time from
access ground and surface water entering the tanks. Since that time, the tanks have
been sealed with risers installed at each tank. On 5-28-98, I completed soil borings
through the mound approximately 1' from the rock bed at each end and at the curve
point of the mound. The sand at the original topsoil was dry to moist at each end and
moist at the curve point. The inspection pipes in the rock bed showed the rock bed to
be full and overloaded. This indicates the rock bed is plugged, not allowing effluent to
pass through the sand. I opened each manhole on the tanks finding no floating layer
and the effluent to be gray in color. This indicates no bacterial growth in the tanks. This
facility uses large amounts of chlorine bleaches, anti-bacterial soaps and antibiotics
which appear to be killing the bacteria needed for an on-site sewage treatment system
to work. Due to the nature of this home, the Health Department requires these products
to be used. -
I feel to repair this system, the problem may only be delayed and occur again. The
ability to connect to the city sewer line is a possibility and is highly recommended due to
the large quantities of the products required to be used in this home. A request will
need to be given to the City of Orono for a possible hook up to the sewer line.
