Beam { V4'R# 298-2} ' As requested, we met yesterday at your home. We observed the new triple 13" Larninated tieneer Lumber (LvL)beam in the living room, spanning 16' supportirzg the upper level bedroom & a portion of the roof, as weIl as tYe large beams installed in a 1930 remodel. The major concern uas the relocated column load on the Masement beam. We measured the structural members & floor areas for later analysis, as welt as discussed likely constructin requirements. HLYSIS Using code prescribed live loads of 40 pounds per square foot (psfl and observable dead loads we performed a structural analysis of the loading line 8 feet in frotn the South side of the house ( where the stacked LvL's were installed}. The new triple 13" LvL can safely support superimposed loads, being stressed to 82°ro of capacity and a mazunum live load defletion ratio of span divided by 350 (= La'350). A historical live load deflection ratio of LJ3601imits plaster cracking. This remodel onl_y slightly exceeds this limit. The estinBasement Beam consisted of 8 laminations af 1 3/4"x 16" LvL. The 8-16"LvL beam can safely support superimposed loads, bzing stressed to 75°ro of capacity and a mamum live load deflection rario of L350. Continuing the vertical load path: the center basement column is stressed to less than(an acceptable) 30(}psi; and the center footing is loadi the soil with 3300 psf(no different than before the latest remodel}. antoxs The new triple LvL Living room beaxn must have the end bearing areas rebuilt with the exclusion of flat lumber ( plates & plywood} from LvL beam to Basement LvL Beam. Shore the beam one end at a time, remove minimal amount of plate and floor, install bearing siuds, block adjacent to bearing studs {under king studs) thru floor thickness. The Eastall with 3- 2x4 (SPF#1+2) direct bearing studs, wth 2x4 king stud each side is adequate to suppart the load. The W est wall with 2- 26 (SPF#I+2) direct bearing studs is adequate to support the load. Solid block 3-2x6 thru floor over Basement beam. The eistin southern 8 foot living room eatension ceiling has a few butt spliced 2x8 joist. These must be doubled with new lumber. %e believe this should address vour immediate needs. If you have any additional concerns, or questions on our , please call to discuss them.
