The commercial building at 3380-3382-3384-3386 Shoreline Drive in the Navarre district of
Orono was constructed in 1937 based on County records. The building is 100 feet in width and
50 feet deep based on surveys on file at the City offices. I have reviewed City building permits
and other City records for this site. The building in the past was divided into as many as 4
separate spaces, as follows, from east to west:
3380 Shoreline Drive - East 40 feet(40' wide x 50' deep) As of 1965 this space was a
clothing Store (Charlotte's)per 1965 Navarre Tomado photo; in 1969 the space was
converted to a restaurant use (first the Unicorn,then Jimmie's, finally the Narrows) and
has been operated as a restaurant ever since.
3382 Shoreline Drive - Centra120 feet(20' wide x 50' deep plus 13'x20' restroom
annex added later)per 1965 tornado photo and City building permit records was operated
as a meat market facility known as Axel &Bob's until ca. 1987 at which time that
business was discontinued. Some time after 1987 the restaurant use at 3380 Shoreline
expanded into this space.
3384 Shoreline Drive - West/centra120 feet(20' wide x 50' deep)per 1965 tornado
photo was a furniture and gift store (Braun's),then in 1967 was remodeled to become a
beauty salon(Building Permit No. 1874). Based on�davits of others, the space was
operated as a beauty salon, first as the Magic Mirror Beauty Sa1on,then Jul Ann's Hair
Fashion, from 1967 until approximately 2005.
3386 ShoreGne Drive - West 20 feet(20' wide x 50' deep)per 1965 tornado photo was a
dry cleaning establishment known as "Magic Cleaners". Based on City records and
�davits of others,the space was operated as a dry cleaning business until at least 1997
and perhaps as late as 2004, with retail space on main floor and dry cleaning facilities in
the basement.
Attached with this affidavit aze affidavits of persons familiar with the history of the uses within
this building. T'he spaces for which Grandparent Demand is requested are the westerly two
spaces, 3384 and 3386 Shoreline Drive. Unfortunately,the City does not have records of water
use for these spaces in this building relative to the period 1968-1978. We do have a water meter
reading record for the space at 3382 for the period 1973-1978 (atta.ched) but it is believed this
pertains to the entire building, not just the Axel &Bob's meat market operation. That document
suggests quarterly water use of 350,000-450,000 gallons.

The undersigned certifies:
I am the owner of the Building and I currently operate a bar and restaurant (the Narrows
Saloon) in the easterly three fifths of the main floor of the Building. In 1999, I acquired
the restaurant business and leased a portion of the existing restaurant premises when it
occupied the easterly two fifths of the Building. In 2000, I remodeled additional space
within the Building and expanded the restaurant to encompass the easterly three fifths
of the Building. The expansion space had previously been occupied by the Axel and
Bob's Meat Market during the late 1960's.
I bought the building from Donald and Dana McCarville in 2004 and at the time of my
purchase, they were operating the Magic Cleaners (a dry cleaning business) in the
westerly one fifth of the building (3386 Shoreline). The McCarvilles had operated the
Magic Mirror business at that location continuously since 1990. Don McCarville advised
' me that the Magic Mirror business had been located at that location since about 1950
and was previously operated by Dick McCurdy, who operated the dry cleaning
equipment full time. According to Don McCarville, the dry cleaning equipment utilized a
'/z' water supply line that was running at full capacity whenever the dry cleaning
equipment was in operation.
From 1999 through 2005, Julie Kreslins operated the Jul Ann hair salon in a rental
space in the Building located immediately east of the Magic Cleaners. The salon
normally functioned with three or more stations for cutting and styling hair and occupied
approximately one fifth of the Building's main floor. Between 2000 and 2005, the Jul
Ann Hair Salon occupied the leased space between my restaurant and the Magic
Cleaners
were familiar with the use of the Building during that period, including Julie Kreslins,
Leroy Koehnen, and Lana Putt. Their Affidavits are submitted herewith. Based upon
t#�eir testimonv. I am of the belief that the tenants that occupied the space now bein�
remodeled for restaurant use between 1968 and 1978 were the Magic Cleaners (an on-
site dry cleaning and laundry business), and the Magic Mirror {a hair salon that normally
operated five or six hair stylinq stations). Upon information and belief, those historical
uses establish "Grandaarent Demand" that began prior to 1968 and continued un�l at
least 1978. Said demand was equal to, or greater than, the demand that wifl be
Ass�ciatc3d with thA nPw rr.staurant.
