The test was conducbed in accordance with the AS'I'M lnbematioaal fire-test response standard E84-13a,

E84 iu an American National Standard (ANSn and has been approved for by agencies of the
Department of Defense. The ASTM 884 test method is the teehnical equivalent of UI.No.723.The best is
applicable bo exposed interior aurfaces such as walls and oeilings. The test is conducted with tie specimen

speeimens shall eikher be self-supporting by its own struchiral quality, held in place by added supports
alcg the test surface,or secured from the back side.
This standard is used to measure and dcribe the response of materiais, products, or assembliea to heat
and Rame under oontrolled conditions, but dces not by itsdf incorporate all factors required for fire-
hazard or fire-risk assessment ofe matrials, products,or assemblies under achal frre wnditions.

The test resulis are expressed as Ftame Spread Index and Smoke Developed Index. The Flame Spresd
index is de6ned in AS7'M S 176 as"a number ar dassi6cation indicating a comparative measure derived
fi► observations made during the progress of the boundary of a zone af flame under deined test

classi8cafion indieating a comparative measure derived from smoke obseuraton data colleced during
the Mat for surface burning characberistics." There is not necEssarily a relationship between the twu
measurements.
The method does not provide for measurement oF heat transmission through the surface tested, the effect

After a material ia subjected bo the ASTM E-84 test, it is given a ratiqg based on its performance
during the test. Matcriais are classified into one of thrce groups based on their testcd flame

Class F1ame Spr¢ad Index
1 (A)0-25
II (H)26-75
III (C)76 200
Class I or(A)rating means it is the most fire resistant category that NFPA recognizes as
necessary for interior wall and ceiling finih matcrials. Jt will be acceptable in any building in
any locality that models its building code after NFPA 101 for wall or ceiling materials.
NFPA l01 is a codc that provides minimum requirements far the desi.gn,operation and
maiirtenance of building and structures for safety to life from fire and similar emergencies, The
tequirements di€fer depending on the type of building.
Many building cades require a smoke developed rating of 458 or less for building materials.
