SOIL OBSERVATION AND TESTING
INTRODUCTION
This report concerns our observation and testing of soil conditions for the planned addition to
Rick's Super Valu in Navarre, Minnesota. Our work was requested by Russ Widmer on August
16, 1991. The scope of work we were authorized to perform was limited to the following items:
1• Observe the soils exposed within the completed building area excavation.
2. Put down shallow hand auger borings within the excavated area.
3. Judge whether tte observed soils are suitable for support of fill and structural
loadings.
4. Perform compaction testing of fill placed to established grade.
CONCLUSIONS
Based on our v,isual observatioii and shallow hand auger borings, it is our opinion that the soils
exposed at completion of excavation within the building area addition consist of naturally deposited
soils similar to those described in tte report to the preliminary subsurface exploration (#4220 91-
1043). These naturally deposited soils consisted of brown and grey lean clay, sandy lean clay and
clayey sand. The soils in the condition observed, were judged to be suitable for support of fill and
structural loadings. According to offset staking and building elevation information supplied by
others, a suitable lateral excavation oversize of l:l appeared to be maintained around the
perimeter of the excavation.

SOIL OBSERVATIONS AND TESTING
CONCLUSIONS (con't..
In the eastern 10 to 12' of the building area addition, the exposed soils consisted of reviously
placed compacted fill, placed to provide structural support for the existing buildig. Thesell soils
were judged to be in a well-compacted condition, as indicated by the results of soil compaction
testing performed by our firm in 1976 during construction of the existing structure.
The results of 43 compaction tests of fill placed to establish grade indicate the specified minimim
compaction level of 95%of the modified proctor density was obtained at the loction and elevation
of these tests. We recommend additional compaction testing be performed of backll plced
adjacent to below-grade foundation elements as well as surficial fill within floo"r slab areas above
elevation 54'.
PRO.TECT INFORMATION
We understand the construction in progress will be a single-story addition to the west side of the
existing structure. The addition will have overall dimensions of about 47.5' x 100' with an
additional smaller area measuring 22' x 28' located at the southwest corner. The majority of the
structure will be of slab on grade construction with finished floor at elevation 57'. A small portion
of the building located in the south central portion of the addition will have a basement with
finished floor at about elevation 48'. The building will be supported upon normal spread footings
consisting of perimeter strip footings and isolated column pads on the building interior. Foundation
elevation will range from about 47' along the south and southern portion vf the west building lines
to about 51' on the north building line, and just below the floor slab on the building interior. The
foundations have been designed based on an allowable bearing capacity of 2,000 psf.
The results of a preliminary subsurface exploration (#4220 91-1043) conducted by our rm were
available for reference during our work. We refer you to this report for specific information
regarding site soil conditions. In summary, the report indicated a typical soil profile consisting of
variable depths of fill and topsoil, underlain by clayey weathered till and till. The report indicated
the weathered till and till underlying the surficial fill, topsoil and softer portions of the weathered
till should be suitable for support of the construction in progress.
OBSERVATION METHODS AND RESULTS
During the period of August 19-23, 1991, we performed a series of intermittent site visits, wheh
requested, during the excavation operations for the planned addition. During dur visits, severa
shallow hand auger borings were put down t aid in dePicting lcal suhsurface conditions. The
exposed soils and those retrieved by our hand auger borings were classied in general accordance
with ASTM: D2488 and compared to those depicted by the preliminary test boring logs. Estimaes
were made of the soil strength characteristics.

SOIL OIiSERVATIONS AND TESTING
OBSERVATION METHODS AND RESULTS (con't )
During our site visits, we observed soils exposed at completion of excavation witin the plaliiiel
building area addition. Within the eastern 10 to 12' of the building area, adjalcent to th existing
structure, excavation terminated upon previously placed compacted fill at relativey shallow depths.
Within the remainder of the building area, the elevation of the bottom of the excavation ranged
from about 33' in the southwest, to 37' in the southeast, 49' in the northwest and 50' to S1' atong
the north building line. Our observation of the excavation adjacent to the existing structu're
indicated that the existing foundations range from 6' in the north, to 10' in the south, below finished
floor elevation, therefore ranging in elevation from about 51' to 47'.
The soils exposed at completion of excavation consisted of brown, mottled brown and grey sandy
lean clay, lean clay, and clayey sand. Some lenses and laminations of sand with silt and silty sand
were encountered in the southern lower lying portions of the excavation. Soils in this area were
also water-bearing. The soils, in the condition observed, were judged to be suitble for support of
fill required to re-established planned building grade.
COMPACTION TESTING
During the period of August 20-29, 1991, 43 compaction tests were performed on 11 placed to re-
establish planned grade. As specified, the tests were evaluated according to the 11odified Proctor
Method (ASTM: D1557). The results of the individual tests are attached. These tests indicate tte
specified minimum compaction level of 95%was attained or exceeded at the location and elevation
of each of these tests.

PREREQUISITES FOR SOUN ENGINEERING PRACTICE
In order to properly evaluate the foundation soiis at a building site, it is imperative fot our fim
to know exactly where the building will be placed, its size, and the elevation of the foUndation
elements. Without this information, a judgement regarding the adequacy of the preparatory'
foundation earthyvork is not possible.
This project data is especially critical in situations when the excavation exteds below Lhe foo'ting
grade and compacted fll will be required to attain building elevations. In these sitUEioris, the
excavation would require lateral oversizing to provide suitabfe lateral distribUtion of tNe footing
loads.
Offset batter boards or the building lines stakes provide the best on-site verification of the build-
ing location and size. It must be recognized that Twin City Testing and Engincerig Laboratoy,
Inc. does not practice in the field of surveying. We, theefore, must ely on staking by otlers. If
Twin City Testing is required to perform the survey, we will retain a licensed surveyor and in-
voice our client for the amount per our cueni fee schedule. Provision of the building foundation .
plans is also important so that we may properly perform our engineering judgements.
If the construction is redesigned or otherwise moved subsequent to ou work, we should be
iformed so our firm can assess if additional engineering observation is required or suggest souhd
engineering alternatives. We cannot be responsible for any soil foundtion system if the structure
has been relocated with espect to the excavation subsequent to our observations.
GENERA OVERSIZE REQUIREMENTS
Because of the lateral distribution of foundation pressures with depth, lateral oversizing is re-
quied in an excavation where unsuitable soils extend below plan footing grade. tlie lateral
oversize scheme povides compacted fill material beyond the exterior footing limit3 where fil)
is required below footing elevation. The degree of lateral oversizing is dependet upot the sur-
rounding soil's ability to resist lateral movement. Although we generally ecommend the lateral
ovenize be at least 2' plus the depth of fill below bottom of footing elevation, each project must
be evaluated separately. For example, in extremely compressible swamp or organic soifS,thover-
size should be increased to 5' plus twice the depth of excavation below footing grade. due to the
variations in the required oversize, an engineering judgemertt must be made to establish the neces- . .
sary extent of the oversizing. Diagrams illustrating typical oversiiing dimensions included
below.

SOIL COMPACTION TESTING
INTRODUCTION:
This report concerns the additional compaction testing we performed for the Rick's Super Valu Project in
Navarre, Minnesota. Russ Widmer of Widmer Inc. authorized this work on August 16, 1991.
SCOPE OF WORK:
The scope of our work consisted of the following activities:
1. Performance of eleven soil compaction tests on an intermittent basis as requested by D. J. Miller
Construction or Mr. Russ Widmer.
2. Determination of the moisture-density relationships for each type of soil encountered in our compaction
tests.
3. Comparison of the test results to the compaction levels required by the project specifications.
TEST METHODS AND RESULTS:
Details of our recent testing are included on the attached data sheets. The compaction tests and moisture -
density determinations were performed in general accordance with the ASTM procedures indicated on the data
sheets.
Review of the test results indicates compaction meets project specifications in these test areas.
REMARKS:
The samples from the individual compaction tests have been discarded. A representative sample of each of the
soils on which moisture-density relationships were determined will be retained at our laboratory until
completion of the project.
