For the LVL beam, glue a 3/" diameter wood dowel in each of the holes. Use a good construction/wood glue, like Liquid Nails or Gorilla Glue. 2. For the 6x6 post condition, provide a 3/4" wide by 1'-6" long by 14 gage strap on the near and far side of the hole. (4 straps total). Attach the strap to the framing with (4)Simpson %" diameter x 3" long SDS screws per strap side. (32 total). From the pictures it appears that there is an orange stud adjacent to the 6x6 post. Nail the stud to the post with 12d nails at 12" o.c. The straps can be attached to the stud on that side. Because the LVLs were bowed at installation, Gary's framing crew bolted the three LVL's together to straighten them out, using 5/8" bolts and washers. The bolts have now been removed to allow for drywall installation. The framing crew has installed GRK rugged structural screws in place of the bolts, set flush with the face of the beam. The inspector wonders if the bolt holes have compromised the beam. Gary is willing to drive 3/<" steel rod into the bolt holes, if necessary. • In order to install a drain line to the kitchen sink, Gary drilled a 2 %" diameter hole through the center of the 6x6 post, located to the east of the kitchen windows.Again, the inspector wonders if the 6x6 post has been compromised. i Laurel Ulland From: Laurel Ulland Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2018 2:15.PM To: 'David C.Johnson' Cc: gsmeichels@hotmail.com; Bryan Meyer (bryanmeyerarchitect@gmail.com) Subject: RE: Martha Head Lake Residence Attachments: Head Lake Residence_53.0 Structural Issues.pdf; Head 1_Kitchen Beam w_Bolt Holes jpeg; Head 2_Kitchen Beam w_Bolt Holesjpeg; Head 3_South Kitchen Wall at 6x6 Post jpeg; Head 4_South Kitchen Wall at 6x6 Post jpeg Hi Dave, I received a call from Gary Meichels today regarding the framing inspection at the Head lake residence. The inspector has two concerns: • There are a number of staggered %" diameter holes in Beam 1 at the opening between the kitchen and living room on the main level. This beam is composed of(3) 16" LVLs. Gary is willing to drive%" steel rod into the bolt holes, if necessary. • In order to install a drain line to the kitchen sink, Gary drilled a 2%' diameter hole through the center of the 6x6 post, located to the east of the kitchen windows. Again, the inspector wonders if the 6x6 post has been compromised. I am attaching a redlined structural plan (53.0) showing the location of the two issues, and photos depicting the current conditions at Beam 1 and at the 6x6 post. We would like your feedback and recommendations regarding the two issues and if any remediation is required. If you would like to talk to Gary directly, he can be reached at 612-210-2286.
