Re: Geotechnical Fxploration Report
Proposed Pazking Lot Reconstruction,2500 Shadywood Road,Orono,Minnesota
Dear Mr.Ugorets:
We have completed the geotechnical exploration report for the proposed parking lot
reconstruction at 2500 Shadywood Road in Orono, Minnesota. T'he purpose of this
geotechnical explorahon was to characterize subsurface soil and ground water conditions and
provide recommendations far site grading, pavement design and infiltration basin
construction.
In general,borings SB-1 tluu SB-3 encountered about 2 to 6 inches of bituminous over 4 to 8
inches of aggregate base underlain by silty sand and sandy lean clay glacial till soiLs to the
termination depths of the borings. Boring SB-4 encountered about 11/z feet of ciayey topsoil
underlain by sandy lean clay soiLs to the termination depth of the boring. The glacial soils
are generally suitable for pavement support but are relatively impermeable and generally
unsuitable for infiltration.
Specifiic detaiLs regazding our procedures, results and recommendations follow in the
attached geotechnical exploration report.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Project Description
Mr.Alex Ugorets is proposing to reconstruct the car parking lot at 2500 Shadywood Road
in Orono, MN. Development plans include removing the existing pavements and
constructing a new car parking lot with the associated concrete curbing, underground
storm sewer pipes and possibly a storm water infiltration basin.
Mr. Alex Ugorets retained Haugo GeoTechnical Services to perforrn a geotechnical
exploration to evaluate the suitability of site soil and groundwater conditions to support
the proposed parking lot and possible infiltration basin.
1.2 Purpose
The purpose of this geotechnical exploration was to characterize subsurface soil and
groundwater conditions and provide recommendations for site development.
1.3 Site Descriptions
The project site is located in the easting car parking lot south of the existing building at
2500 Shadywood Road and north of Shadywood Road in Orono, MN. The existing
parking lot is paved and generally slopes from west to east with ground surface elevations
at our soil boring locations ranging from about 951 1/z feet to 9631/s feet mean sea level
(MSL)•
1.4 Scope of Services
Our services were performed in accordance with our proposal dated Apri17, 2016 and
under the Haugo GeoTechnical Services general conditions. Our scope of services was
limited to the following tasks:
• Completing four(4)standard petration fiest borings to nominal depths of 21 feet.
• Visually/manually classify samples recovered from the soil borings.
• Performixtg laboratory tests on selected samples.
Preparing soil boring logs describing the materials encountered and the resulLs of
groundwater level measurements.
• Preparing an engineering report describing soil and groundwater conditions and
providing recommendations regarding site development
1.5 Documents Provided
We were provided with a certificate of survey dated November 4, 2015 prepared by
Gronberg and Associates. The certificate of survey shows the proposed soil boring
locations and the locations of the existing car parking lot, building, roadways and surface
topography contours.
1
1.6 Locations and Elevations
The boring Iocations were selec by Mr.Alex Ugorets. The approximate locations of the
borings are shown on the "SoBoring Location Sketch" provided in Figure 1 in the
appendix. .
Ground surface elevations at tle boring locations were obtained by HGTS using GPS
measuring equipment. Elevatiohs were based on MN County Coordinates System mean
sea level using the GEOID09(Cqnus)model. GPS coordinates at the boring locations are
provided in Figure 2 in the Appndix.
2.0 FIELD PROCEDURES
Four(4)standard penetration te5t borings were advanced on Apri115,2016 by HGTS with
a rotary drilling rig, using Continuous flight augers to advance the boreholes.
Representative samples were oed from the borings, using the split-barrel sampling
procedures in general accordance with ASI'M Specification D-1586. In the split-barrel
sampling procedure,a 2-inch 0..split barrel spoon is driven into the ground with a 140-
pound hammer falling 30 inch . The number of blows required to drive the sampling
spoon the last 12 inches of an 1 inch penetration is recorded as the standazd penetration
resistance value,or"N"value. e results of the standard penetration tests are indicated
on the boring log. The samplestere sealed in containers and provided to HGTS for testing
and soil classification.
A field log of each boring was pepared by the HGTS drill crew. The logs contain visual
classifications of the soil materils encountered during drilling, as well as the driller's
interpretation of the subsurface onditions between samples and water observation notes.
The final boring logs included th this report represent an interpretation of the field logs
and include modifications based on visual/manual method obsexvation of the samples.
The soil boring logs, general ' ology for soil description and idtification, and
classification of soils for engine ' g puroses aze aLso included in the appendix. The soil
boring logs identify and desc be the materials encountered, the relative density or
consistency based on the Standa#d Penetration resistance(N-value,"blows per foo')and
groundwater observations.
T'he strata changes were inferred from the changes in the samples and auger cuttings. The
depths shown as changes between strata are only approximate. The changes are likely
transitions, variations can occur ond the location of the boring.
3.0 RESULTS
3.1 Soil Conditiona
In general, borings SB-1 thru SB- encountered about 2 to 6 inches of bituminous over 4 to
8 inches of aggregate base und lain.by silty sand and sandy lean clay glacial till soiLs to
the termination depths of the ' gs. Boring SBencountered about 1/s feet of clayey
2
topsoil underlain by sandy lean clay glacial till soiLs to the termination depth of the
borings.
Penetration resistance values(N-Values),shown as blows per foot(bpon the boring logs,
within the silty sand soils ranged from 11 to 21 bpf and within the sandy lean clay soiLs
ranged from 5 to 17 bpf. The N-Values indicate the soils are generally in a medium dense
density of inedium to stiff consistency with some upper soft zones.
3.2 Groundwater
Groundwater was not encountered in borings while drilling or to cave-in depths of 11 to
13 feet after removing the auger from the boreholes. However, given the cohesive naiure
of portions of the soils, it is possible that insufficient time was available tor perched
groundwater to seep into the borings and rise to its hydrostatic level.
Groundwater measurements were made as noted and shown on the boring logs.
Groundwater monitoring wells or piezometers would be required to more accurately
determine water leveLs. Seasonal and annual fluctuations in the groundwater levels
should be expected.
3.3 Laboratory Tests
Laboratory moisture content tests were performed on selected samples recovered from the
soil borings. Table 1 below summarizes the results of the laboratory tests. Results of the
laboratory moisture content tests are shown on the boring logs adjacent to the sample
tested.

3.4 OSHA Soil Classification
The upper soils encountered in the borings consist mainly of sandy lean clay soiLs. The
soils identified in the borings will generally be Type B soils under Deparmnent of Labor
Occupational Safety and Health Administration(OSHA)guidelines.
3
4.0 DISCUSSON AND RECOMMENDATIONS
4.1 Proposed Construction
The project will consist of r onstructing the edsting car parking lot and possibly
consh ucting a storm water tration basin. No specific grading plans for the new
parking lot were available at e time of this report. We assume that some new storm
sewer utilities and structures wiittll be associated with the new parldng lot.
4.2 Discussion I
In general, borings SB-1 thru SB3 encountered about 2 to 6 inches of bituminous over 4 to
8 inches of aggregate base unde9rlain by silty sand and sandy lean clay glacial till soils to
the tPrn,ination depths of the rings. Boring SB-4 encountered about 1'/z feet of clayey
topsoil underlain by sandy leaii clay soiLs to the termination depth of the boring. The
glacial soiLs are generally suitalle for pavement support but are relatively impermeable •
and generally unsuitable for i.nfitration.
Groundwater was not encounteed in borings while drilling or to cave-in depths of 11 to
13 feet after removing the ager from the boreholes. We do not anticipate that
groundwater will encounfiered during utility and pazking lot construction.
The following sections provideecommendations for site development.
4.3 Parlcing Lot Recommendati,bns
We assume the existing pavemnt will be reclaimed, stockpiled and used as aggregate
base in the new parking lot. Were the new parking lot will be constructed beyond the
edsting pazking lot,we recommnd the vegetation and topsoil be removed. The following
table indicates the anticipated Iccavation depths at he boring locations. Excavation
depths may vary and could be cleeper.

SB-3 956.9 1-4 956-953
SB-4 951.3 1 9501/s
*Excavation depths and el vations were rounded to the neazest 1/z foot.
The sandy lean clay soils enco tered at borings SB-2 and SB-3 should be removed and
replaced with engineered fill r scarified, dried and compacted to provide a stable
pavement subgrade. Where ex avations for soil corrections extend below the proposed
pavement elevations oversizin (widening) of the excavations will be required. This
oversizing is required to provi e lateral support of the replacement backfill and the
4
pavement loads it will support. We recommend oversizing (widening) the excavation 1
foot horizontally beyond the outer edges of the perimeter concrete curb for each foot the
excavation extends below the bottom of the desired pad elevation(1H:1V oversizing).
Fill placed to attain pavement subgrade elevation can consist of the on-site sandy lean clay
and silty sand soils provided it is free of organic topsoil material or other deleterious
materiaLs. We recommend compacting the backfiill at moisture contents within a range of
1 percentage point above and 3 percentage points below its optimum moisture content.
The fill and backfill should be compacted to a minimum of 95 percent of its standard
Proctor maximum dry density with the upper 3 feet compacted to at least 100 percent of
standard Proctor..
Prior to placing the aggregate base(Class 5)we recommend proof rolling the pavement
subgrade with a loaded tandem truck to identify soft, weak, loose or unstable areas that
may require additional sub-cuts.
R-Value testing was beyond the scope of this project. The soil borings mainly encountered
native soiLs consisting of predominanfly of sandy lean clay conesponding to the ASTM
Classifications CL. We recommend using an R-Value of 10 for pavement design.
We recornmend the proposed pavement section in car parlcing areas consist of 3 inches of
bituminous wear and 8 inches of aggregate base. In drive lanes with some truck traffic,
we recommend the pavement section be increased to 31/s inches of bituminous weaz and
10 inches of aggregate base.
We recommend aggregate base meeting MN/DOT specification 3138 for Class 5 aggregate
base. We recommend the aggregate base be compacted to 100 percent of its maxunum
standard Proctor dry density.
We recommend that the bituminous wear and base courses meet the requirement of
MN/DOT specification 2360.We recommend the bituminous pavements be compacted to
at least 92% of the maximum theoretical density.
We recommend specifying concrete that has a min;mum 2g day compressive strength of
3,900 psi.We recommend specifying 5 to 8 percent entrained air for exposed concrete to
provide resistance to freeze-thaw deterioration. We recommend slump, air content and
compressive strength test of Portland cement concrete.
4.4 Utilities
We anticipate that the storm sewer utiliiies will be supported generally on native clayey
glacial till soils which in our opinion aze suitable for pipe support. We recommend
removing all edsting vegetation, topsoil, soft or other unsuitable soils, if encountered,
beneath utilities prior to placement.
We recommend bedding material be thoroughly compacted around the pipes. We
recommend trench backfill above the pipes be compacted to a uinim of 95 percent
beneath pavements, the exception being within 3 feet of the proposed pavement subgrade,
where 100 percent of standard Proctor density is required. In landscaped areas we
recommend a xrLnimum compaction of 90 percent.
5
4.5 Infiltration Basin Design Recommendations
Design infiltration rate(s) base on the soil borings and the MPCA MN Stormwater
Manual are summarized in theollowing table.
Table 2. Desi Infiltratiorl Rates
Soil e Desi Infiltration Rate* i
CL,Sand Lean Qa 0.06
SM,Sil Sand 0.45
Field tests (double ring infiltror►eter)Can be performed within the proposed basin areas
to verify infiltration rates of tYle in-situ soiLs. We would be pleased to provide these
services if required or requested.
4.6 Site Grading and Drainagel
We recommend the site be gralded to provide positive run-off away from the existing
building. We recommend landcaped areas be sloped a m;nimum of 6 inches within 10
feet of the building and slabs be sloped a minimum of 2 inches. In addition we recommend
downspouts with long splash bocks or extensions for each house.
5.0 CONS'I"RUCTION CONSIDERATIONS
5.1 Excavation
The upper soils encountered inllthe borings mainly consist of sandy lean clay. The soiLs
identified in the borings will enerally be Type B soiLs under Departrnent of I.abor
Occupational Safety and Helth Administration (OSHA) guidelines. Temporary
excavations should be construted at a minimum of 1 foot horizontal to every 1 foot
vertical within excavations. Slqpes constructed in this manner may still exhibit surface
sloughing. If site constraints doot allow the construction of slopes with these dimensions
then temporary shoring may be required.
5.2 Observations
A geotechnical engineer sho observe the excavation subgrade to evaluate if the
subgrade soils are similar to tho e encountered in the borings and adequate to support the
proposed construction.
5.3 Backfill and Fills
Portions of the site soils that ' be excavated and reused as backfill and fill appear to be
above their assumed optimum moisture content. We anticipate it will be necessary to
6
moisture condition (dry) these soiLs to achieve the recommended compaction. We
recommend that fill and backfill be placed in lifts not exceeding 4 to 12 inches, depending.
on the size of the compactor and materials used.
5.4 Testing
We recommend density tests of backfill and fills placed for the new parking lot. Samples
of the proposed materials should be submitted to our laboratory prior to placement for
evaluation of their suitability and to determine their optimum moisture content and
maximum dry density(Standazd Proctor).
5.5 Winter Construction
If site grading and construction is anticipated to proceed during cold weather, all snow
and ice should be removed from cut and fill areas prior to additional grading and
placement of fill. No fill should be placed on frozen soil and no frozen soil should be used
as fill or backfill.
Concrete delivered to the site should meet the temperature requirements of ASTM and/or
AQ. Concrete should not be placed on frozen soil. Concrete should be protected from
freezing until the necessary strength is obtained., Frost should not be permitted to
penetrate below the footings.
6.0 PROCEDURES
6.1 Soil Classification
The drill crew chief visually and manually classified the soiLs encountered in the borings
in general accordance with ASI'M D 2488,"Description and Identification of SoiLs(Visual-
Manual Procedure)". Soil teraunology notes are included in the Appendix. The samples
were returned to our laboratory for review of the field classification by a geotechnical
engineer. Samples will be retained for a period of 30 days.
6.2 Groundwater Observations
Immediately after taking the final samples in the bottom of the borings, the holes were
checked for the presence of groundwafier. Immediately after removing the augers from
the borehoie the holes were once again checked and the depth to water and cave-in depths
were noted.
7A GENERAL
7.1 Subsurface Variations
The analyses and recommendations presented in this report aze based on data obtained
from a linuted number of soil borings. Variations can occur away from the borings, the
nature of which may not become appazent until additional exploration work is completed
7
or construction is conducted. A reevaluation of the recommendations in this report should
be made after performing n-site observations during construction to note the
characteristics of any variation T'he variations may result in additional foundation costs
and it is suggested that a contgency be provided for this purpose.
It is recommended that we beetained to perform the observation and testing program
during construction to evaluatwhether the design is as expected,if any design changes
have affected the validity of ourrecommendations, and if our recommendations have been
correctly interpreted and unpllemented in the desis, specifications and construction
methods. This will aliow °rrelation of the soil conditions encountered during
construction to the soil boringsnd will provide continuiiy of professional responsibility.
7.2 Review of Design
This report is based on the desi;;n of the proposed paridng lot reconstruction as related to
us for preparation of this repoIt is recommended that we be retained to review the
geotechnical aspects of the des and specifications. With the review we will evaluate
whether any changes have aff the validity of the recommendtions and whether our
recommendations have been c nectly interpreted and implemented in the design and
specifiications.
7.3 Groundwater Fluctuations I
We made water level measure ents in the borings at the times and under the conditions
stated on the boring logs. 'i'heata was interpreted in the text of this report. The period
of observation was relatively sort and fluctuations in the groundwater level may occur
due to rainfall, flooding, irrigati n,spring thaw, drainage, and other seasonal and annual
factors not evident at the tim the observations were made. Design drawings and
specifications and constructionlanning should recognize the possibility of fluctuations.
7.4 Use of Report
'This report is for the exclusive tse of Mr. Alec Ugorets and their design team to use to
design the proposed structures, and prepaze construction documents. In the absence of
our written approval,we make!no representation and assume no responsibility to other
parties regarding this report. The data, analysis and recommendations may not be
appropriate for other structures'or purposes. We recommend that parties contemplating
other structures or purposes cotact us.
7.5 Level of Care
Haugo GeoTechnical Services, ILLC has used the degree of slcill and care ordinarily
exercised under similar circumsance by members of the profession currendy practicing
in this locality. No warranty exressed or implied is made.
