The purpose of this Memorandum is to review the proposed roof
framing with respect to the porch addition to the residence at
2056 Shadywood Road, Orono, Minnesota.
1 . A porch roof structure is being added to the existing
structure .
2 . After the City of Orono Building Permit Plan Review was
completed, the owners desired to make a change wherein the
main beams would be cantilevered as noted on the attached
sketch.
3 . The roof construction is as follows :
a. Main beams 4"x10" cedar.
b. Roof rafters 2"x8" @ 24"OC.
4 . The roof framing has been reviewed with respect to the
proposed change involving the cantilevers of 36" , 30" and
19" respectively using design loads as required by the
Minnesota State Building Code.
a . The 4"x10" roof beams and 2"x8" joist C 24" OC are
adequate .

b. All members are to be attached to resist uplift .
c. At the intersection of the two main beams at the
northwest corner, the connection should be a notched
half and half and logged together from the top with a
30" cantilever half on the bottom.
5 . Following these recommendations, these cantilevers will be
structurally adequate in accordance with the code.
