To: Orono residents on mound type septic systems
From: Wiilie Gibbs, ISTS Manager
Date: May 10, 2006
Re: Landscaping Do's and Don'ts for Mound Systems, Quick Reminder
Do plant and maintain a full cover of grass and keep mowed to a normai height, this grass cover aids
in the evaporation of large amounts of effluent(the liquid left after the "othe' stuff has been removed)
in the summer time and ailows the mound system to help breakdown nitrogen in the effluent.
Do water the grass over the mound in extreme dry conditions, sparingly.
Do avoid unnecessary foot traffic over the mound, mow it and stay off of it. This is especially true in the
winter time. Even human foot traffic can cause frost to penetrate the mound resulting in potentiai
freezing problems.
Do inspect your mound system annually for winter kiil, (reseed if necessary) animal damage,
(burrowingj or signs Qf potential failure.
Do not plant trees or shrubs on the mound system, smaller trees and shrubs may be planted at the
edges. Remember, that sunshine is the key to a healthy mound system.
Do ask questions, if you have any concerns or questions concerning your mound system
please feel free to call me, l can be reached at 952-249-4625.

SUBJECT: Proposed Subdivision for Willow Properties,
Gary Peterson - Soils and Site Investigation
Rev iew
I have reviewed the ten proposed lots and wish to make the
 following comments:
Based on the Hennepin County Soil Survey, soils on
this property include Lester loams and clay loams,
Hayden loams, Hamel loams and LeSeur loams, as
well as a good deal of marsh. Tested sites are
located on the higher, better-drained soils. Some
areas of sandy soil were reported on the most
easterly lots. Based on the soils and water table
data submitted, shallow trench or standard trench
systems appear suitable for all lots. Following is
a summary of the soils data for each site:
Lot 1 Block 1 - Percolation Rate Average 22 MPI both
sites
- Primary site - slope 5 - mottling at 3 . 5 ' - water
table at 3 . 5' - modified shallow trench system*
Maximum Trench Depth 6" into original soil
- Alternate site - slope 8$ - mottling at 4 . 0 '
Water table at 4 .9' - shallow trench s stem - maximum
trench depth 12" into original soil
Lot 2 Block 1 - Percolation Rate Average 18 MPI both sites

 - Alternate site - slope 5 - mottling at 4 .0 ' - water
table at 6 .4 ' - shallow trenches - maximum trench depth 12"
into original soil .
*Modified Shallow Trenches - where water table or mottling
is between 3 .0 ' and 4 .0 ' below the surface, a standard
12" rock depth (6" under pipe, 2" over) must be used in
conjunction with an appropriate depth of fill material
to retain a 3 .0 ' separation between the bottom of trenches
and the water table or mottling. Fill should consist of
material ciassified as loamy sand (USDA classification) .
The original soil must be dryer than the plastic limit
before placing fili . The original surface must be scarified
or disced to break up the surface vegetation mat. The
loamy sand fill must be placed over the entire area so that
no trench will be located less than 10 ' from the edge of
the f ill . The depth of fill required will depend on the
allowable depth of excavation into original soil based on
the water table or mottling.
I recommend that the subdivision be approved as proposed. The
developer should be warned to keep all traffic, fill excavation,
etc. away from the tested drainfield sites. In some cases
where road construction will be near the tested sites, extra
caution must be taken.

Qn r'.ay 4-30, 1983 six percolation holes were tested on
each of 10 lots and 3 soil borings taken on each lot as well
in accordance with tre provisions of Individual Sewage Sys-
ten Treatment Standards (WPC-40) adopted in 1978 by the N:inn-
esota rollution Control tigency. In addition, other soil bor-
ings were taken in lower areas to determine the possibility
of obtsining more than 10 lots but water tables were found
to be verg high and the soils were fcund to be very slowly
ermeable .
ccerdng to the soils mps and the information we
four_d in the field, tne higher areas had very good sols #'or
drainfields while the lower areas and swales had extremely
poor soils ior drainfields . Thus, we tended to stick to the
hig'r,er areas while still leavir_g room for ample buildg

A Complianc;e Inspection was completed for the existing on-site sewage treatment
system locafied on this property for a remodeling to the home. The system consisfis of
2-1000 gallan septic tanks, 1-10G0 gallon pumping chamber & a pressurized mound
system with a 10' x 65' rock bed. The sizing factor for a mound system is .83sq.ft./gal =
f22 sq.ft. which would require a 10' x 62' rock bed, a 10' x 65' rock bed was found
which is a,dequate for a 5 bedroom home.
oil boring #f1 found mottled soil (redox features) at 2.5' below grade. Boring #3 found
the original soil at elev.937.7 & the bottom of the rock bed at elev. 938.9 which leaves
1.2' of sand below the rock bed 8 a 3.7' separation from the bottom of the rock bed &
redox featurE:s. Boring #2 found mottled soil at 1.7' below grade. Boring #4 found the
original soil t elev.936.7 & the bttom of the rock bed bed at elev. 939.0 which leaves
2.3' of sand below the rock bed & a 4' separation frorn the bottom of the rock bed &
redox featur:s. This system is in compliance with Minnesota Chapter 7080 rules.
The tanks wE:re pumped by Elmer J. Peterson Co. &were found to be water tight.
Nothing othr than gray water (laundry, showers, etc.) human waste & toilet tissue
should be disposed of into the septic tanks. Garbage diposals are not recommended,
due to adding more solids & fine solids passing through to the system. Recommend to

divert iron filters out of the system, recommend to divert the water softner also if
diverting the iron filter. Excessive amounts of soaps, antibactetial soaps, cleaning
agents, shower cleaners used every shower & chlorine agents may kill the bacteria
needed to treat septic effluent. Additives are not recomrnended. Recommend to pump
& clean your tanks through the manhole by a certified pumper every 2 years. Check
with your pumper to set up a schedule.
This Certificate of Compliance is no guarantee that this system will continue to function
indefinitely.
