GENER�L INSTRUCTIONS
l. Applications for septic system permits may be mailed or submitted in person at the City
Offices; however, permits will not be mailed out. The permit must be picked up in
person at the City Offices and work must not begin unless the permit card is on the job
site.
2. Permits will be issued only to contractors holding a City of Orono Septic System
Installers License.

reports are not considered approved unless accompanied by the "City af t)rono Septic
System Approval" cover sheet si�ned by the City Inspector.
4, The followin� inspections will be required for all septic systems:
A. Pre-installation site inspection to include inspector, installer, and general contractor.
B. Tank installation prior to covering.
C. Drainfield trench installation prior to covering. For mounds, inspection is required
after rough-up but prior to sand placement (sand will be jar tested for silt content),
and a�ain during pressure distribution piping installation in the rock bed.
D. Final inspection to verify proper final cover depths and to verify that all pump station
(where required) components are iunctional and comply with codes.
5, Individual holding MPCA Installer Certificate shall be present during inspections: A 24-
hour notice is required for all inspections.

THIS IS NOT A PERMIT. This is a design approval form which must accompany the site pian. A permit must
be issued to a licensed septic contractor prior to installation. A list of currently licensed septic contractors is
enclosed.
NOTICE TO INSTALLERS: Any changes to the approved plans and specs must have prior approval of tl:�e
Inspector (473-7357). Call for inspections 24 hours in advance.
ALL DRA ���-D AREAS MUST BE FENCED OFF prior to buiiding site excavation and fencing must r�main

in place unti final site grading. ApQroval to pour footings will not be granted until�tlle Inspections Department
has verified that primary and alternate sites are adequately protected.
NO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC OF ANY KIND (cars, tnicks, earth moving equipment, etc.) is allowed within 2�'
of tested drainfield sites either before or after system construction. Compaction of these areas could rende:them
unusable pro�ibiting the timely completion and or limiting the long term use of the property.
A site copy will be available at the City Offices for the septic contractor.

This 0�-Site S wage Treatment System is Designed for a Type 1, four
bedroo home D signed in accordance with the Minnesota Pollution
Contro� Agency Chapter 7080 and local ordinances .
The soils on tlhis site are a clay loam. A seasonally high water
table �vas located at 12" to 24" , (mottled soil ) . Due to the
seasondlly hig� water table, a Pressurized Mourid System will need
to be installed for adequate treatment of septic effluent.
This site has �n exsting trench system which is less than 3 ' from
the se3�sonally high water table & the bottom of the system. A
boring ; into th� system indicated the system is also hydraulically
overlo�ded. T�e system is Non-Conforming.
The so�ls at a� depth of 12" have a percolation rate averaging
12. 2 min/inch. ;
A pumping cham�er will need to be installed to lift the effluent
to the treatme�t area.
The manifold and supply line pipe must have back drainage to the
pumping chambeX. The distribution pipes shall have their ends
capped. Be sure the rock and sand fill material are clean. The
sod layer beloW the entire mounded area must be �urned over, just
break up the sbd, be sure not to over work.
The power supply and switches must be located outside the manhole
and pumping chamber in a weather proof enclosure. A warning device
must be installed with a light and sound device, this is in case of
a pump failure;.
All neighborinig wells are located greater than 100 ' away from the
propos�d treatment area.

Keep alil heavy equipment ofE of the proposed treatment area before
and aftler const uction. The treatment area should be marked off
before iconstruc�ion. This Design is not valid & the system will
need to� be relo�ated if failure to protect the areas proposed
for On-Site Sewage Treatment occurs.
With proper ins�allation and maintenance, this system should
have no problem' in treating septic effluent effectively.
Nothing other t�an gray water (laundry, showers, etc. ) human waste
& toilet tissue should be disposed into the septic tanks. Garbage
disposals are n�t recommended. Excessive amounts of soaps, cleaning
agents & chlorir�e agents may kill the bacteria needed to treat
septic effluent Additives are not recommended. Recommend to pump
& clean your tar�k through the manhole by a certified pumper every
year if you have 1 tank and every 2 years if you have two tanks.

This site has an exist�ng on-site sewage t�eatment system, a pressurized mound system
for a 4 bedroa�n home that was +nst�tled in 1995. The mound system has been
hydraulicelly overtoaded due to graund w�ter seep9ng into the he8t duct system in the
basement sla� � being pumped irrto the mourrd. Soif borings and probings through the
ma�nd found o overloading of the sand layer or at the origina) topsoil. Na evidenae of
cromppaction w�s found et the original topsail. To repair tt�e mound, approximately fi"of
the sand below the rock bed wil) need to be removed and reconstructed replacing all
sand, rockbed, distribution pipe, sandy loam &�tapsoil.
