Section 1505. (a)refers to condensing units with a compressor horsepower
rating greater than 100. Condensing units typically have condensers, compressors, evaporators,
and accessories. This system has remote air cooled condensers outside the building, and the
remaining indoor equipment would not normally be called a condensing unit.
The four compressors in the equipment room total less than 100 horsepower when rated at 5
degrees saturated suction temperature. Therefore, we decided that a"Refrigeration Machinery
Room" as defined by the 1991 UBC isruired.
The ice rink system is an indirect system with R-22 refrigerant and glycol. R-22 is a Group 1
refrigerant as listed in Section 1503. (A), The ice rink equipment room, as constructed, complies
with the construction requirement's outline in section 1507 for Group 1 refrigerants, though it is
not required.
Refrigerant R-22 is non toxic and non combustible; the only hazard present is oxygen
displacement. A dedicated exhaust system serves the ice rink equipment room and has an
emergency activation sequence initiated by a refrigerant leak detection monitor to remove the
refrigerant from the room if a leak is detected_
The 1994 Uniform Building Code refers to Refrigeration Equipment Rooms and references the
1994 Uniform Mechanical Code. The 1994 Uniform Mechanical Code has not been adopted by
the State of Minnesota. The refrigeration equipment room requirement's outlined in the 1994
Uniform Building Code would be applicable to a Group 2 refrigerant such as ammonia.
L,116001160710011AS11;S V27L W P6;Ls
cc: Victor Pechaty, Rozeboom-Miller
Zoo Ej itoog3z02I (I31 081.8 ILI- ZI9 XVd 90:60 L6/ /60
