c,
To: Ron Moorse, City Administrator
Bruce Vang, Inspector
From: , Mike Gaffron, Senior Planning Coordinator
Date: August 29, 1997
Subject: Orono Ice Arena Landscape Plan
Gary Schroeder, Operations Manager for the Ice Arena, has submitted a revised tree planting plan
that substitutes coniferous trees for most of the hardwoods originally planned for those areas
generally within 50' of the building. They are getting these mature pine and spruce trees from the
school annex east of Old Crystal Bay Road, where the existing rows of trees need thinning.
The deciduous trees will provide some immediate screening adjacent to the building which might
take 5-10 years to develop with the smaller deciduous stock initially proposed. Also, it appears there
are no areas where sidewalks would be shaded all day long where icing might result.
Note that the original plan appears to propose additional trees (honeylocust, red maple, red oak)
within and around the parking lot area.It is not clear whether these are proposd at this time, but they
will help to soften the view of the parking lot,and will be more in keeping with the existing school
property trees along the west side of Old Crystal Bay Road.
I recommend approval of the revision, subject to the placement of the 12 or so deciduous trees
proposed around the parking lot in the original plan. The original resolution referenced the original
plan, but did not specify species. It is my opinion that as long as the original planting layout is
generally followed, this does not require Council review.
Please give me your thoughts so we can advise Schroeder Tuesday morning how to proceed.
