MSP National Weather Service Station and reported by the National Agricultural Statistics
Service. Precipitation has been erratic in 2014 - first extraordinarily wet and in the past 4 weeks
quite dry. Therefore, the climatic conditions were recorded as "No".
The 2014 DNR NWI update identified the wetland as PEM IC/PFOIA. The wetland is a shallow
marsh/shrub carr, the larger southeastern portion of which is dominated by emergent herbaceous
vegetation on one side and willow shrub on the other. We would classify this wetland as
PEM1C/PSS1C in the NWI Cowardin classification system (Eggers and Reed Classification -
Shallow Marsh/Shrub Carr; Circular 39 Type 3/6). Vegetation in the seasonally inundated
wetland was dominated by cattail (appears to be Typha latifolia OBL) and sandbar willow(Salix
exigua OBL) with dense reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea FACW) and purple loosestrife
(Lythrum salicaria OBL) around the edges and upslope to the wooded area. Transition to
uplands is marked by slope and, in some areas, increased woody vegetation.
Transect SP 1-1 was taken from the northeastern boundary of the wetland. The soils at sample
point SP 1-1 Wet consisted of a dark loam layer at the surface with a depleted loam immediately
below and loam clays and clays beneath. Hydric indicators A11 (Depleted Below Dark Surface)
and F3 (Depleted Matrix) were present. The soils at sample point SP 1-1 Up consisted of a dark
loam at the surface with silt clay layers below, including a depleted layer. Hydric indicator Al2
(Thick Dark Surface) was present.
At sample point SP 1-1 Wet secondary hydrology indicators D2 (Geomorphic Position) and D5
(FAC Neutral)were present. Wetland hydrology was not indicated at sample point SP 1-1 Up.
Transect SP 1 S-1 was taken from the southwestern boundary of the wetland. The soils at sample
point SP 1S-1 Wet consisted of a dark loam layer at the surface with loam and sandy clays
below. Hydric indicators F6 (Redox Dark Surface) and F8 (Redox Depressions) were present.
The soils at sample point SP IS-1 Up consisted of several layers of a depleted loam. Hydric
indicator F3 (Depleted Matrix)was present.
At sample point SP 1 S-1 Wet secondary hydrology indicators D2 (Geomorphic Position) and D5
(FAC Neutral)were present. Wetland hydrology was not indicated at sample point SP 1S-1 Up.
The area represented by Transect 1S was mapped as a PFO IA wetland type on the DNR 2014
NWI wetland mapping update however the transect data indicate that this area is non-wetland
dominated by sugar maple(FACU)in the canopy and 40 percent in the shrub layer.
Detailed soils, vegetation, and hydrology data for the delineated jurisdictional wetlands are
provided in the data sheets of the Technical Documents section.
DISCUSSION
SER completed all on-site delineations based on the three required technical criteria as outlined
by the 1987 Manual: the presence of hydric soils, a predominance of hydrophytic vegetation,
and indicators of wetland hydrology in each basin. The site visit portion of the wetland
delineation was completed on 8/23/14.
SER personnel examined the subject properties for areas meeting jurisdictional wetland criteria
during the site visit and delineated the edges of two wetlands as being jurisdictional wetlands
Svoboda Ecological Resources 3 2535 Old Beach Road
Project Number:2014018 Orono,MN
