1 <br /> � <br /> 310.9.1 Smoke detectors. <br /> 310.9.1.1 General. Dwelling units, congregate residences and <br /> hotel or lodging house guest rooms that are used for sleepin�pur- <br /> poses shall be provided with smoke detectors. Det�ctors shall be <br /> installed in accordance with the approved manufacti::ec's instruc- <br /> tions. � <br /> 310.9.1.2 Additions, alterations or repairs to Group R Occu- <br /> pancies. When the valuation of an addition, altera:ion or repair <br /> to a Group R Occupancy exceeds $1,000 and a pern:i:is required, <br /> or when one or more sleeping rooms are added or created in exist- <br /> in� Group R Occupancies, smoke detectors shall b� installed in <br /> accordance with Sections 310.9.1.3, 310.9.1.4 and 310.9.1.5 of <br /> this section. <br /> EXCEPTION: Repairs to the exterior surfaces of a Group R Occu- <br /> pancy are exempt from the requirements of this sectic�. <br /> 310.9.1.3 Po�ver source. In new construction, reeuired smoke <br /> detectors shall receive their primary power from the�uildin�wir- • <br /> ing when such wiring is served from a commercia� source and <br /> shall be equipped with a battery backup.The detecto:shall emit a <br /> signal when the batteries are low. Wiring shall be permanent and <br /> without a disconnecting switch other than those requi::.d for over- <br /> current protection. Smoke detectors may be solely battery oper- <br /> ated when installed in existing buildin�s; or in buile:n�s�-ithout <br /> commercial power; or in buildings which undergo al::rations, re- <br /> pairs or additions reaulated by Section 310.9.1.2. <br /> 310.9.1.4 Location �•ithin dwelling units. In dwelling units, a <br /> detector shall be installed in each sleeping room ar.� at a point <br /> centrally located in the corridor or area giving access to each sep- <br /> arate sleeping area. When the dwelling unit has mo:e than one <br /> story and in dwellings with basements, a detecto: shall be in- <br /> stalled on each story and in the basement. In dwellinJ units �s•here <br /> a story or basement is split into two or more levels, t�.� smoke de- � <br /> tector shall be installed on the upper level, except t::�t when the <br /> lower level contains a sleeping area, a detector shali be installed <br /> on each level. `Vhen sleepin�rooms are on an uppei l�vel, the de- <br /> tector shall be placed at the ceiling of the upper level i�close prox- <br /> imity to the stairway. In d�velling units where the ceilia�hei�ht of <br /> a room open to the hallway serving the bedrooms exc�eds that of <br /> the hall�vay by 24 inches (610 mm)or more,smoke d�tectors shall <br /> be installed in the hallway and in the adjacent roo�::.
