This letter is to require you to rebuild the stairs to code
before September 5, 1994. tatistics show stairways to be very hazardous. About 800,000
accidents annually are attributed to stairway use in the United States. Approximately 4,000 are
fatal. Therefore, it is imperative that stairways be constructed to code at the very least.
Accidents will still occur on stairs, but if they are built to code, there won't be lawsuits naming
you, the City and the property owners as liable parties. It is unfortunate that the homeowner
may lose some closet space and that you will have to go through the work of rebuilding, but if
it saves one person from injury or death, it is well worth it.
The City will initiate legal action if the above deadline is not met. If you have any questions
or if I can assist you in any way, feel free to contact me at my office.
Sincerely,
 `
Lyle Oman
Building Official
LO/lsv
cc: Jeanne A. liabusth, Building & Zoning Administrator
Bruce L.
