June 1997
To whom it may concern:
Following is brief description of my background and present qualifications relating to my
chosen profession as a Building and Fire Codes Consultant.
Presently I am 68 years of age. I am married, have two grown children, whom are both
married, and we have five grandchildren. We live at this time in Vadnais Heights,
Minnesota and spend our winters in our home in Alamo, Texas to escape the Minnesota
winters, and while there continue our consulting with architects, cities, attorneys etc.
I grew up in a family that ran a logging and lumbering business, so learned many lessons
about lumber as a construction material, the grading of lumber and about the various types
of species of wood and types of lumber at a rather young age.
As my father passed away while I was still in high school, and I was too young at that time
to continue in his business, the balance of the family started a retail lumber business with
lumber that had been cut and sawed in our logging operations.
I completed college, U of M at Duluth, MN., was married and served a two year hitch in
the Marine Corp., returned to my home town of Barnum, and ran the family lumber and
construction business for approximately five years. I have spent a total of 13 years in the
retail lumber sales industry.
I had by this time moved to the twin city area, and began my own construction business in
this local. I did this for 10 years, and in 1970 was asked by the City of Oakdale to
become its building inspector. I served this city, which is a second ring suburb of Saint
Paul, as its building official unti11979, acting also as its fire marshal for the last 7 years.
During this time the Minnesota State Building Code, became effective throughout the
state. I was invited to and did accept a position on the State Building Codes and
Standards Division staff as a consultant in June of 1979 and served in that position until I
left to follow this independent consulting business of mine full time in the fall of 1985.
My clients are primarily the design professian. for whom I act as an consultant on design
matters, cities and counties, for whom I do plan review and act as a consultant to their
building inspection staffs, some contractors, the legal profession for whom I act as both
consultant and expert witness, and in some special cases an individual home or business
owner with building code problems.
I graduated from the U. of Minnesota, Duluth, with a BS. degree in Industrial Education
in 1951. Since that time I have taken numerous courses from various colleges offering
correspondence courses in Millwork,Lumber, Paint etc.. I have earned a total of 27
credits in"Building Inspection Technology" from our two local community colleges of
Inver Hills and North Hennepin.
