1
DATE: 2-22-93
TO: Jeanne Mabusth
FROM: Officer Rurt Erickson
, SUBJECT: 1200 Loma Linda
On 2-21-93 at approg. 2:00 pm. Orono Police were called to the
rental house at 1200 Loma Linda. There are two houses there that
share the same address. The house we responded to was the smaller
one, located closest to the public road.
We found the occupant, a 69 year old man, to have been injured in •
a fall occurring within the residence. He had a significant -
laceration to his head which required that he be removed from the
house for medical attention.
I became concerned after seeing the condition of the house that
this gentleman is living in. I noticed that the bathroom had no
sink in it. The toilet is non-functioning and was full of black
water. I asked the gentleman if there was water to flush the
toilet or some that I could wash him up with. He stated that the
water lines are frozen and have been for some time and that he has
no running water in the residence at this time.
I noticed that the house was also full of a lot of junk with just
a small trail allowing access to several different areas within the
structure.
While trying to find somebody that could care for the gentleman's
dog while he was taken to a hospital, and until he returned to the
residence, I found out that the person who owns this building
resides at 1210 Loma Linda and that this person has three rental
structures adjacent to his property.
I went to the landlord's house to notify him of the incident and
ask if he would look after the small poodle pending the victim's
return. The landlord had no expression of concern whatsoever for
the victim. His only statement was he isn't supposed to have any
dogs in that house, what do you mean there is a dog there?"
I also observed what I would consider to be a stove that is a fire
hazard in the residence which is the sole source of heat. The
victim in this manner indicated that he had to use gas line deicer
to keep his stove functioning and he had a small electrical fan
hooked up by the stove pipe to provide air circulation.
I am concerned about the health and welfare and overall safety of
this structure. In observing the dirty water standing in the
toilet, the lack of running water to the facility, the fire hazard
contained within the structure with flammable liquids being kept '
near the stove, etc.
