Allowing for live load of 40#/s.f. and dead load of 10#/s.f. leaves excess
capacity of 4#/s.f.
The cerrter beam at the garage, 5 1/2" x 13" or 6" x 14" nominal at a span of 21.33' will carry
onty 294#Ilin.ft. at a deflection of L/360. The total load of 50#/s.f. at 12' span results in a total
load of 600#/lin.ft. The excess load of 306#/lin.ft. can be supported by the addition of two gang-
lam beams 1 3/4" x 14" glued and nailed on both sides of the presetrt beam. The total load
capacity of these beams is 384#/lin.ft. added to the 294#/lin.ft. carried by the original beam
making a total capacity of 778#/lin.ft,, or 178#/liu.ft. excess capacity. Live load deflection at
L/360 is 480#/lin.ft. The capacity of the three members together is 550#/lin.ft. at L/360.
Additional studs must be added under the beams at bearing. The gang lam beams by Structural
Wood Corporation used in calculations, have an Fb of 3100 P.S.I. and an"E"of 2.0.
The beam in the garage at the east wall nearest the dining room has onlyabout 2/3 of the load of
the center beam. I think it would be a good idea to add one 1 3/4" x 14" gang-lam glued and
nailed to this beam This would preverrt atry additional load to be transfened to the first floor
structure through the stud wall below it.
Yours truly, • •
KILSTOFTE ASSOCIATES, INC.
, I ofte . . .
cc: Doug Holcombe
