(Plr,se note that itcm1 of the September 7 letter incorrcctly
allows 4 plies of 11 7/8"LVL. That should have read 4 plies of 18"LVL.)
From our discussions, you have indicated you would like to add 2 plies of 18"LVL to die
existin3-plyLVL tesm. I have evaluatod the beam nnd determined that thc addition of 2 plies
of 1,VI will bc adeqvate under the following conditions:
• F,r•aluate the structure(especially the existing 3-ply LVL)for any defects.
• Jack up the header slightly to remove some of the deflection if possible.
• Ensure that the 3 plies aze currently pmperly fastened wgether—add nails to the inside ply if
required to provide 3 rows of 16d common nails at 12"on center in each row.
• Install2 plies of 18"LVL(one ply at a time)nailing each ply with 3 rows of 16d common
nils at 12"on center in each row. Note"en9ure contact at the top, with framing above(shim
i f nccessary);trim 2x6 plate as required for flush installation.
• E3ott all 5 plies using 3 rows of'/"bolts(with washers)at 12"on centor in each raw.
• Provide support for the ends of the LVL,to the foundation below.
Note that the columns at the ends of the 5-ply beam must support as much as 25,000 lbs. The
foundation and footings must be capable of supporting those loads.
   - .
- -- .... . .
