Below is my opinion of the
overall design of the septic system.
In summary, the design does appear to have taken into account the major design concern for
churches in that they tend to have high effluent flows intermittently with little or no flow when
there are no church services. This tends to be the same scenario when the facility would be used
for weddings and receptions also.
From my experience and training, the best way to account for and manage high intermittent
flows is with a timer system and a lazge pump chamber. This system does have both. The
essence of this is that the timer prevents the mound from being over dosed at any one time and
the excess effluent is held in the pump chamber and pump out gradually over time. You will
know if eventually too much effluent is being generated because the alarm in the pump sta.tion
would sound.
The suggestions made by Mr. Gibbs are noteworthy ones to consider and would apply to any
septic system, maybe excluding the water meter for residential systems.
I did check the depth of solids in the first septic tank for the church which was about 4 inches
with only a thin scum layer. It seems the tank was pumped within less than 3 years. Since I was
there with the pump truck,I did pump the first septic tank for the church. A little extra pumping
doesn't hurt.
It is my opinion that this design for the church and the carriage house is adequa.te and deals
effectively with the high intermittent flows that are generated by church establishments.
Feel free to ca11 me at 612 310-7887 if you have any more questios or concerns.
Dale Denn
HomeStead Septic
MPCA License#583
