Box 66
Orono, MN 55356 Crystal Bay, MN 55323-0066
December 6, 2004
Forrest & Renee Burke
3 80 Leaf Street
Long Lake, MN 55356
RE: Lighting Violation @ 380 Leaf Street
To Whom It May Concern:
The City of Orono contacted you in October with a letter dated October 1, 2004 regarding
a lighting violation at the above noted address (previous letter attached). The City of
Orono continues to receive complaints regarding the light fixtures affixed to the entrance
monuments located on your property. City Code Section 78-1573 states the following:
"Any zse requiring an operation producing an intense heat or light transmission
shall be performed with the necessary shielding to prevent such heat or light from being
detectable at the lot line of the site on which the use is located. Lighting in all instances
shall be diffused or directed away from R districts and public streets. "
City policy regarding this regulation is that the source of the light, or the filament, inust
not be seen by the naked eye. Contact with you following the October 1, 2004 letter led
to the understanding that lower wattage bulbs and opaque glass would be installed in an
effort to decrease the illumination and sight of the filament at the lot line and over the lot
line. As of the date of this letter, those efforts have not been seen.
Please take the necessary steps in order to comply with Section 78-1573 of the Zoning
Ordinance. An inspection will be conducted on Decernber 20, 2004 to determine whether
the lighting complies with Section 78-1573. If you have questions I can be reached at
952-249-4623. Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
City of Orono
OLQ~ 1
Janice Gundlach
City Planner
Telephone(952)249-4600 • Fax(952)249-4616
www.ci.orono.mn.us
