Lee Tomlinson, Park Commission Chairman, ORONO ORCHARD ROAD <br /> reviewed the Park Commission minutes of April 4 , BRIDGE <br /> 1978, which state: <br /> P�4r. Otto Christensen, trail planner for the <br /> Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, <br /> presented his department' s plans for a renlace- <br /> ment bridge at the crossing of the Luce Line <br /> Trail and Orono Orchard Road. The proPosed <br /> structure would be a clear span arched bridge , <br /> 10 ft. pathway of steel construction with wood <br /> rails and trim. Primary reasons for considering <br /> a new bridge were: <br /> l. Inability of current bridge to accommodate <br /> road and drainage improvements without dis- <br /> rnantling. <br /> 2. Increasing cost of new bridge in future years <br /> if installation is delayed. <br /> 3. Difficulty experienced by trail users who <br /> • must cross at road grade elevation. <br /> A motion by Tomlinson, seconded by Kelley, to <br /> recor.unend to the City Council_ that DNR plans for <br /> a new bridge be favorably considered was <br /> unanimously passed. <br /> Council r�eeting - April 13, 1978 <br /> P�ayor Van PZest: Is the new bridge necessary? <br /> Jir.t Olson, City Engineer: Staff has reviewed and <br /> does recommend that the bridge be replaced. Problems <br /> are: drainage, narrowness, bad piling, and bac� <br /> culverts. <br /> P4ayor Van Nest: The bridge should be the Department <br /> of Natural Resources' responsibility, not Orono. <br /> Paurus r.loved, Butler seconded, to redeck and retain <br /> the old bridge conditioned on the bridge beinc� saf_e <br /> and will continue to be maintained by the Depart- <br /> r.lent of Natural Resources.
