REGULAR idEETIPJG OF THE OROP10 COUPJCIL, JANUARY 23, 1978 Page 40
Petitioners strongly contend that they do. SANDY BEACH r4ATTER
Piecemeal efforts on behalf Qf the City of (Continued)
Orono certainly will not put an end to the
problerls at the Sandy Beach.
As stated at the public hearing, the law
regarding what constitutes a private nuisance
is well defined. The City of Orono is not immune
fror attack with respect to its riaintenance of
a private nuisance at the Sandy Beach. The
etitioners have decided to aait until ridsuramer
to see if the problems dramatically decrease
as the Council suggested they would upon proper
enforcement of the Sandy Beach area. If those
problems are not resolved by that time, further
action against the City will be necessary. I
urge the City of Orono to stand behind its
proposed efforts ith regard to eliminating
the serious problems that now exist at the beach
area, and if the City fails in this regard, I
would expect it to recognize its failure and
close the beach area.
End of letter
Council Meeting - January 23, 1978
Dick Benson, City Administrator, was requested
by the City Council to respond to r1r.
