Of <br /> + 1232 calls this year, many were in the early <br /> part of the season ��hen we had heaw seeding <br /> � (a response fror_m last year' s drought causing <br /> fewer and smaller leaves) and considerable <br /> � ar.lounts of elm leaf miner. The larval stage of <br /> � the miner feeds on the tissue between the upper <br /> and lower epiderrial layers of the leaf, causing . <br /> i large portions of the leaf to turn brown. When <br /> this occurs throughout most of the tree, it has <br /> an impact that causes many residents to think <br /> their trees are diseased. Approximatelv 500 of <br /> the calls in 1977 were on these two problems. <br /> '� There were only 12 problem situations where <br /> ' residents were not cooperative on diseased tree <br /> removal. Of these, six registered letters were <br /> � sent, and additional measures had to be taken on <br /> only one case, �ahere bids were taken, and the low <br /> � bidder removed the diseased wood. <br /> � Occasionally, there is a problem with an individual <br /> ` on fixed income that cannot afford removal of the <br /> tree.
